Description

14-year-old Joe is the only child of Jeanette and Jerry — a housewife and a golf pro — in a small town in 1960s Montana. Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job — and his sense of purpose — he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother's struggle as she tries to keep her head above water.

Not sure how I missed this in theaters but wow - 5/5. The performances are outstanding - Carey Mulligan's best role yet. Incredible directorial debut by Paul Dano - first of many.

Especially for adult children of divorce or troubled marriages, this film brings back all of the confusion, impotence and despair. A brilliantly acted, written and directed movie, difficult to watch, but will worth the pain. Carey Mulligan gives an extraordinary performance.

I adored this film. The acting, especially from Carey Mulligan, is so powerful and so masterful. This is not the film to watch if you want lots of action or bang bang shoot 'em up stuff. Not at all. This is quiet, building to an ending that left me in tears.

No surprise Paul Dano is as brilliant a director as he is an actor. I’ve honestly never been a huge Carey Mulligan fan so this role took me by surprise - she’s a force of nature, bitingly funny one moment and heartbreaking the next. One of my favorite films of 2018 for sure.
  • Beautifully Told Story

Both directed and acted beautifully, this sobering story feels honest and is told with perfect patience. An incredible first directed role for Dano - with the story excellently crafted by Kazan and Dano.

It made me so mad at every character I wanted to scream. Even at the kid. And the coupling of the two fires was so on the nose I just thought, "Oh please." Fooey balooey, Hughie.
