Description

In "The Public" an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an "Occupy" sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what's really happening. This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation's most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library.

Emilio Estevez is interesting. He was very popular when I was a kid in the 80’s but due to acting in a lot of bad movies in the early 90’s, he sort of fell off the radar. He’s directed scripts he wrote for the last 30 plus years. They have ranged from really not good (Men at Work) to ok (The Way). I was looking forward to The Public and hoped it be that slam dunk for EE. I think it has good moment and good performances including his (probably his best acting role to date and Alec Baldwin is great as well). I think the movie just didn’t quite work dramatically. One of the things that got me is part of the drama is the blistering cold which causes the homeless patrons to refuse to leave the library. The way it was photographed acted and directed it was obvious that it was 50 degrees outside. Actors did not act cold, seemed comfortable, didn’t wear gloves, etc. it all lessened the dramatic stakes for me.
