Description

France, 1760. Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Because she is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Héloïse by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Héloïse’s first moments of freedom. Héloïse's portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love.

I am so glad to be in a country where I don’t have to be in the closet. it must have hurt for them be unable to fully express themselves except for behind closed doors.

This is perhaps the best movie I have ever seen. And not sure any other will overtake this from the perch of my list any time soon. Celine is a genius director and writer who understands that subtlety can be truly sublime. Noemei Merlant is so unique in her grace, intelligence & perceptive kindness that I am not sure anyone else could have done justice to Marianne’s character as well as she has. Adele Haenel was equally fantastic in portraying Heloise - charming, free spirited and rebellious! The chemistry between them is so great filled with moments of joy, pain and everything in between including that of an indescribable sense of deep care for each other. It’s absolutely a travesty that this move wasn’t sent for Oscar nominations. But it is Oscar’s loss. This movie is that great!

Simple: just watch this. It deserves to be in top movies of 20th century. It is not a queer cinema masterpiece, it is a masterpiece!

I myself am a fan of period films and this film is beyond breathtaking. They captured raw beauty, the cinematography was beautiful, the characters were well rounded and had back story. It definitely is one of its kind. I now understand why it has its 98% rating.

I cannot stop thinking about this incredible film. It is gorgeous, romantic, inspiring, bittersweet, and damned powerful. It also features some of the best use of music I’ve seen in a film. Music is purposefully scarce throughout the picture, and you’ll understand why once you see it. The final scene is breathtaking. This is one of the very best movies of last year.
