Description

A hit at the Sundance Film Festival, Lonesome Jim, the new comedy by Steve Buscemi, is a dead-pan hilarious coming-of-age story. Suffering from self proclaimed "chronic despair," Jim (Casey Affleck) returns from NYC to his Indiana hometown and everything he was so anxious to leave behind. As he connects with his family and takes a hilarious gig as a winless pre-teen girls basketball coach, he encounters a beautiful nurse Anika (Liv Tyler) who is everything he isn't - optimistic. The relationship opens the door to a future in which Jim might be able to move forward without leaving everything from his past behind. As you'd expect from Buscemi, the film is filled with marvelous, understated performances and hilarious unexpected insights.

I like quiet contemplative films but this was absolutely awful. There are a few nice moments here and there, but over all, a real turkey. And if I see one more film where a beautiful, lovely, self-supporting and kind woman eagerly takes up the biggest loser of all time, I think I will file charges against the filmmaker. There's an implicit misogyny to this EXTREMELY COMMON pattern in films. Sorry Mr. Buscemi, you're a great actor and the word on the street is that you're a nice man (and that's what counts anyway).

    Depressing, slow, and lifeless.

Throughout most of the movie I kept wondering if I missed something. The story wasn't believable. There were some comical moments, though. If nothing else I know I now have a crush of Casey Affleck but that's about it. Worth renting, if it were an option, not worth buying.

This movie is a lame story of a lame character. The acting and writing is stilted and uninspired. See Tree's Lounge. That's Buscemi's best effort.

I love steve buscemi and indie films and dark comedy... but this movie was lackluster at best.

I loved this movie!! Everything about it reminded me of home, the midwest. The house, the trains going by, the winter sky and trees, Buscemi captured the midwest in 90 minutes. The acting was excellent. Perfect casting. Liv looks like a midwestern girl, I can't think of anyone else in H-Town that could capture that look. Well, H-wood is made up of weird looking, non-eating waifs if ya ask me. The parents were perfect. Everything was done to perfection. The Uncle even looks like my uncle. Awesome and funny. Loved it!

I thought this movie lacked in pretty much every area. The characters weren't really that likeable, the plot was completely disheartening, and the humor just wasn't enough to redeem the film from it's lackluster script. Unless you really favor the indie genre, I wouldn't recommend taking the time to watch it. On a side-note, this film was NOT made in nor made to represent Goshen. While small parts (the theater, the hospital, and a few street scenes) were filmed in Goshen to make the town appear larger, majority of it was filmed in TINY Cromwell, Indiana, with accompanying shots of Ligonier, Indiana. The only draw of this movie for me was that, being from Ligonier, I recognized almost every location that they used. Only locals from the areas where the movie was filmed in might presuemably find something to appreciate.

I liked the movie and the setting, as i am from Elkhart IN, a town that borders Goshen, the town this movie is set in, it represents Goshen quite well.

If the slow pace and dull plot don't knock you out, the soundtrack alone will do the job. A bottle of NyQuil is still cheaper.
  • Dismal. Dreary. Don't do it!

We love Buscemi-usually. Halfway through the movie we couldn't bear trudging through it a moment longer. And took the time to write this. Wish we could get a refund. It is that bad. Some good dark humor on the page, I suppose-but it is bitter and lifeless like your worst days-so you can't appreciate it. Not our thing, anyway.
