Description

One of the most popular movie comedies of all time is also the film that made John Belushi a star. This raunchy, screwball comedy, directed with madcap zest by John Landis, offers a relentless spoof of 1960's college life by following the hilarious adventures of the Delta fraternity. In addition to Belushi as "Bluto" Blutarsky, the outstanding cast includes Tim Matheson, Tom Hulce, Stephen "Flounder" Furst, Karen Allen, Donald Sutherland, Peter Riegert and Kevin Bacon, along with Otis Day and the Knights with their show-stopping performance of "Shout."

This movie is still the best after all these years (1978). Funny with a lot of good laughs. Acting and directing first rate. I wish that my college days were half as great as this film. A must see for all those college bound people who want to Toga. Enjoy!

It’s pledge night at Faber College, so get ready for some wild crap! We open with freshmen Larry Kroger (Thomas Hulce) and Kent Dorfman (Stephen Furst) trying to get into Omega Theta Pi, a prestigious fraternity that acts with class and dignity. Then they go to Delta Tau Chi after they feel unable to get into Omega, because Kent’s a legacy. This is where we get our first taste of the wild college life that was promised, and they deliver: loud music, graffitied walls, and more booze than you could shake a sack of empty booze containers at! The contrast between the two frats in this opening sequence is both obvious and hilarious! You’d think a movie like this would have great characters. They’re relatable, but have a character development point average of -4.0. They’re never really shown as people, just implied and are mostly there to make spectacles of themselves (I’d use language like theirs, but kids might read this, so I’m gonna keep it clean, but there’s some salty language peppered in here and there). You’d also think that such a movie would have an incoherent plot. They pass both the pacing and coherence with a 3.0 average, because they waste no time and you can tell where they were (unless you’re supposed to) and the story is simple to follow: guys join debaucherous frat, get in trouble, and have to save their hides and the frat. Their reasons are pretty superficial, but the results are so hilarious, I’ll give them a pass (though the last act wouldn’t be seen as a fun prank today). Also, you can probably guess the ending because Animal House built the foundation of the overall house of college party movies. Elmer Bernstein’s score is hard to hear among the loud rock and jazz songs used throughout, kinda like trying to hear someone at one of the parties. Overall, Animal House is a fun romp stuffed with slapstick comedy and low brow humor that both shocks and delights!

I recently saw a FB post of Rookie NFL Quarterback Marcus Mariota doing a remake of a scene from Animal House. The scence on the stairs where Belushi smashes the guitar, then they go into the Shout scene with Otis Day and the Knights. It’s such a great scene, and they got Otis Day and his Knights to perform this remake. Awesome!
  • Classic. Enough said.

It is simultaneously vulgar and sophisticated, literate and sophomoric. Stupid and intelligent. How better to sum up the Baby Boomers? John Belushi made a fair number of movies - but most of them weren’t very good. This one is. Tim Matheson wasn’t a very good actor. In this one he’s magnificent. John Vernon was a brilliant choice. Tom Hulce did Amadeus, this…and? Never have so many forgettable actors come together to do something so memorable. The writing is brilliant. John Landis never did anything anywhere nearly this good. Donald Sutherland was brilliant in his three scenes. Hey, this is my job.
  • If you have not seen this movie your life is lacking. Seriously.

They must have written this story and made the movie about my days at Virginia Tech in 1974. The frat was Sigma Nu and the people were Jimmy Crack Corn, Ozzy, Fust, Bill, Vegtable Lady, Steve, Bif Barf, Elton, Buck Huff, and Albert. This movie will make you laugh over and over again. I have watched this movie over a dozen times and it is still funny. This movie brings me back many memories of college life and all the stupid stuff you did back then or will do if you haven't gone to college yet. I still remember the B.O.C. group that tore up the 4th floor at Rasche Hall on a drug induced rampage. Wow, this movie brings back memories. Hope to see you at the pool diving with Elton.
