Description

Superstar boxoffice champ and Oscar-winner Clint Eastwood ("Unforgiven," "Million Dollar Baby") is back in the saddle again in one of the biggest hits of 1985. In the tradition of "The Outlaw Josey Wales," Eastwood stars as the nameless stranger who saves a California gold-rush community from a merciless mining tycoon. An action-packed adventure climaxing in one of the most exciting showdowns ever filmed. Co-starring Emmy Award-winners Michael Moriarty ("Law & Order") and Richard Dysart ("L.A. Law"), Christopher Penn ("Mulholland Falls") and Carrie Snodgress ("Diary of a Mad Housewife").

  • Retelling of High Plains Drifter

This movie is just a retelling of High Plains Drifter in a different setting. Clint, the avenging Preacher ghost, has been shot in the back by the bad guys instead of being whipped to death as in High Plains Drifter. High Plains Drifter is the better movie and one that I continue to enjoy each time I watch it. High Plains Drifter is much better written and directed than this knock off.

im a big clint eastwood and western fan, but this movie is for an audience of 65 years of age and up. it's incredibly slow and the story is weak and predictable to a degree of boredom. you will thank me later.

An all-time great film. In my personal top ten. I am an avid film buff since growing up in a small Alabama town with nothing but great little theaters in the downtown area. Very early on Clint Eastwood stood out and became a favorite of mine. In the 80's I took Fridays off when big movies opened. I was so glad to take off the opening Friday of Pale Rider. Every viewing since has confirmed my decision. Thank you Mr. Eastwood from one of your biggest fans Rod

You'll love this movie. As everyone else points, out: Clint at his best, solid Western storyline. The supernatural element is so subtle most people miss, and will likely argue that it isn't there. Watch it. Great fun.

This is an okay movie but i would not advise it to people who have a thing for aktion and all that get Unforgiven that is a better movie by a long shot dont waste your time with this
  • Normal Western, minus . . .

This is a fine western, but not incredible, as some have said. Most of the plot lines are obvious to anyone who has seen a handful of westerns, and a certain element of Eastwood's character, The Preacher, takes all the suspense out of the final shoot out (to say more would be a spoiler) . I rented this, expecting a great film. Instead, I got a passable western. Only rent if you can't get some of his other work, like "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly," or "The Outlaw Josey Wales."

A grizzled Clint--"squint, squint, squint like Clint"--reprising another, more earthly version of his avenging and vengeful angel role, is about as guilty a pleasure as one could ask for in a Western. Michael Moriarty is surprisingly good in his role as the hapless gold-panner-become-family-man. Richard Dysart is quite good as the mean-spirited town boss. Well-paced, with the occasional light touch. There is, in fact, "nothing quite like a good piece of hickory." The rental in HD is nice, but the film transfer video quality is such that you do not miss much if you choose to buy it.
