Description

Life in 1847 Paris is as spirited as champagne and as unforgiving as the gray morning after. In gambling dens and lavish soirees, men of means exert their wills and women turned courtesans exult in pleasure. One such woman is Marguerite Gautier (Greta Garbo), the Camille of this sumptuous romance tale based on the enduring Alexandre Dumas story. Garbo's aloof mystique and alabaster beauty illuminate this George Cukor-directed film featuring what many call her finest performance. Her Camille is a movie paragon of true love found (in suitor Armand Duval, memorably played by Robert Taylor), then sacrificed for a greater good. Garbo earned an Academy Award nomination and the New York Film Critics Best Actress Award for her memorable work.

I always heard of the great Greta Garbo and finally decided to see Camille. I was stunned by her acting technique and the emotion she conveyed, sometimes only with her eyes. Her voice is also unique and adds to her ability to project her feeling. We all know how it's going to end, I just could not believe how she brought Camille's final scenes to life.

Even though I was crying a river for the entire last 10 minutes of this movie, it was excellent. Loved it.

Yes, it's a tear jerker, but there are some great performances and wonderful dialogue.

A grand example of the glamourous and golden Hollywood days, Camille is a lovely and memorable film adapted from the novel by Alexander Dumas fils. Although it was previously filmed with Rudolph Valentino as a silent film, this edition is highly superior! A love story focusing on a prostitute who finds love with an earnest and handsome man, this is a great portrayal of the ultimate sacrifice women make for men they love (also good examples are Random Harvest and the ever-wonderful Waterloo Bridge). Greta Garbo shows her true star power in this film, and is absolutely radiant. Robert Taylor is young and dashing as Armand, and you will find yourself swooning over him! One of the legendary Barrymores is in this film, and he plays Armand's father in a delightful cameo(ish) part. This is a definitive love story, a rare gem that manages to evoke emotion (and tears!) upon multiple viewings. Thank you iTunes, I think I'll buy this one!
