Description

A U.S. Navy Captain and his crew are just beginning to enjoy 48 hours of leave when they receive word to immediately return to duty. On a top-secret assignment, they must disguise themselves as Nazis and infiltrate a severely damaged Nazi U-boat. Once on board, they are to steal the Nazi's top-secret decoding device and sink the sub before the Germans catch on to what's really happening. Their mission is more dangerous and frightening than anything they could have ever imagined, but one which has the power to turn the tide of battle.

  • Good movie - but not about the British Enigma

Three Enigma machines were captured by the Allies during the war. The best-known is the machine captured by the British. This is not that story. Unlike comments from those with a passing knowledge of history, this is not a wild reinvention of the Brisith story. It is the wild reinvention of an American story. There's a profound difference. As entertainment, it's great. But it is not a documentary. As for other comments, submarines were manufactured and shaken-down on the east coast before heading to the Pacific, but in 1941 they began missions to track down German submarines and, after Pearl Harbor, to hunt them down and kill them.
  • Distortion of facts

This is truly sad. It was the British that recovered the Enigma machine. How can you distort a historical truth like that? Reminds me of the Road to Berlin at WW2 Museu in New Orleans. There is no mention of the Russians, although General Weidling signed the unconditional surrender of Berlin to Vice Admiral Chuikov, who was the defender of Stalingrad. Chuikov did not bother to introduce himself. Only after he had signed the surrender document did Weidling realize who his counterpart was. The museum just shows the surrender of Germany to the Allies 7 days later. No mention of the Russians first raising the Soviet flag on the Reichstag at great cost of Russian lives. Come on, we sacrificed a lot during WW2. Can we give the countries that fought with us a fair share of credit? It will not diminish our great contributions.
  • Ok, but not historically accurate.

Ok, so people like me (I study WWII) all know about the U-boat. They also will find out this story is ABSOLOUTELY FALSE! One, it was the British, not the Americans (there was never a major naval engagement between Germany and the US, the US was focused on Japan), that captured the enigma machine not once, but twice (it was improved the second time). Also, the U-boat wasn't ambushed during a covert operation, it was depth charged to a point of near sinking, and a British destroyer team recovered it. Also, a sub can't exceed maximum depth without being squashed like a soda can. And no U-boat would have survived being machine gunned, exceeding maximum test depth (look up the Thresher) set on fire twice, shot up from the inside out, taken two direct hits with 12 inch shells, and being depth charged three times. Overall, this movie had action, but PLEASE make it historically accurate!

I Like to learn about WW2 and this is the perfect example
  • Why can't Americans enjoy a war story with someone else as hero?

A travesty of history: The BRITISH were the smart and brave ones who recovered the enigma cypher, NOT the Americans. On the 9th May 1941 when this U boat was captured by the Brits, the US was NOT EVEN IN THE WAR yet!! It's shameful to see the comments below swallowing this and flag waving... the wrong flag. No matter how well made, I object on principle.
