Description

Master of Broadway comedy Neil Simon adapted his hit play about a conservative young lawyer and his off-the-wall bride for this warm film classic. Robert Redford is Mister Straight. Jane Fonda is his new wife, who dedicates her life to the pursuit of fun. As the ecstasy of the honeymoon gives way to the reality of setting up housekeeping in a five-flight walk-up, the harmony of marriage turns to comical discord. The mother-in-law complains meekly. The middle-aged lothario upstairs flirts. Joy turns to anguish. There is little doubt that the young people will kiss and make up by the end of the picture, just as there's little doubt that the mother and the neighbor will find each other. Fonda and Redford make a wonderfully successful comedy team.

  • One of the Best Classics Ever

Few stage plays are adapted to the big screen as well as Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park was. It helped that Neil Simon adapted his own material. This, in my opinion, is one of the top 5 best Rom-Coms of all time and one of the top 15 best comedies of all time. This movie displays Robert Redford and Jane Fonda at their best. Robert has never looked more handsome, Jane has never been so sexy. Robert’s “serious” pro-bono lawyer is a great balance to Jane’s freestyle newlywed wife. Both of their performances are great. They both have great chemistry together (which is why they made a couple of other movies together, though not as good as this masterpiece). The entire supporting cast is just wonderful, specially Mildred Natwick as Jane’s mother. The pacing is spot on (it never drags). I agree with others that the staircase bit never gets old. In fact, the first time I saw the movie, the staircase joke just got funnier and I laughed harder each time it was brought up. Definitely one of Neil Simon’s best work and one of the best cinematic ensembles.

I remember when I saw Barefoot in the Park for the first time on TV on a winter night! I never was laughing that much while watching a movie! It became my favorite movie. The movie is just cozy and hilarious. I love the atmosphere, I am a autumn and winter person! And of course, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford are such a beautiful couple! I also bought the soundtrack by Varèse Sarabande and I listen to it all the time. The music is so cozy and beautiful. I strongly recommend the movie and the soundtrack (also available on iTunes!) to everyone! I don't understand how this movie has only 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is flawless!

I have lived in a 5-story walkup going on over 40 years. And, I don't mean to make fun of my visitors or my daughters much younger friends. But, to see "whatever" generation gasping for air upon entering our door has always managed to bring out the classic scene. I don't want to give the scene way but it involves Mom's first visit. And, it is Perfect! Enjoy

My mother and I watched this for the first time (1968) together and we were both rolling on the floor with laughter. Mildred Natwick's scene of climbing the stairs is priceless! She was terrific in this movie. I am a huge fan of Redford's and this is one of my favorite movies of his. Redford and Fonda make a great couple.
  • A fantastic screenplay, not so much as a movie.

In as much as this isn't a terrible movie, there was another production filmed live and shown on PBS back in the 80's with Richard Thomas. THAT performance was incredible, and I only wish it were available for purchase :)
