Description

In 2004, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl volunteered to escort home the body of a 19-year-old Marine killed in Iraq. It would prove to be a life-altering experience. Kevin Bacon stars as Strobl in this profoundly moving HBO Films drama that looks at the military rituals for honoring its war dead from the perspective of one fallen soldier named Chance Phelps. Strobl never knew Phelps before taking the assignment, but as he journeys across America, he discovers the great diligence and dignity in how the military handle such dark duties--and comes to grips with his own issues of guilt when he meets Chance's gracious family and friends. Directed by Ross Katz; screenplay by Lt. Col. Michael R. Strobl, USMC (ret.) and Ross Katz, based on the journal by Lt. Col. Michael R. Strobl, USMC (ret.)

I enlisted in the Army 2003, at the age of 17. I knew it was going to be hard to watch this, but I’m so glad I did. There were moments in this movie I’ve felt firsthand. I’ve had people say the exact same things to me, I’ve felt the LTC’s exact reaction Bacon portrayed. This is a masterpiece, and one hell of a tear jerker- even I cried. This is the story of a Marine’s journey home. This is not a story about how a Marine died, or a battle he fought in.
  • A movie that truly honors our military heroes.

This movie deserves so much more than 5 stars. It draws you in and then actually makes you, the viewer, part of the journey. By the end of the movie, I felt like I knew this hero personally. My heart was broken for him dying so young and also for his family. Kevin Bacon gives a very convincing and powerful performance as Lt. Col. Michael Strobl. I have never seen a movie that honors our fallen heroes as good as this movie. Thank you Lance Corporal Chance Phelps (and your family) for your ultimate sacrifice for our Nation. I had tears in my eyes throughout the entire movie.

There are no words that could best describe this movie. It brought me back to my days in Iraq and reminded me that I was one of the lucky ones that was able to come to my family. The movie helped others to be grateful and appreciative to our fallen hero’s.

Five years ago our community lost Sgt Michael Guillory while on a mission in Afghanistan at only 24 years old. Michael had served 4 stints between Iraq and Afghanistan. The turn out to honor him as his body was transported from the airport to the funeral home was astonishing and the crowds for the funeral was even bigger. Shortly after Michael’s death a friend told me about this movie and it was so hard to watch having just been through a friend losing her son but it touched me so to see and know how loving and respectful each step is taken in getting our fallen to their final resting place.

IMHO, a tour de force portrayal by Kevin Bacon, who completely emerses himself in this role without overplaying it.

In my opinion, this is among the best two or three films ever made about the US Marine Corps: it captures Marine Corps culture flawlessly in a realiistic and respectful manner.
