  • The Adventures of Baron Munchausen - 1943 version is BEST

This is an amusing and generally good film. It is not as good as Muchhausen (1943). The 1943 version was filmed in full color in German. It avoids any political issues of that time. The German version is directed by Josef von Bakey. Regretfully it is not on iTunes.

  • A Real “Killer” B Movie (one of 237!)

This review is an excerpt from my book “Killer B’s: The 237 Best Movies On Video You’ve (Probably) Never Seen,” which is available as an ebook on iBooks. If you enjoy this review, there are 236 more like it in the book (plus a whole lot more). Check it out! THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN: It’s an incredibly imaginative fantasy; a living storybook; an extravaganza of effects and eccentric invention; a fabulist masterpiece; an Epic Adventure film worthy of the Baron’s own legendary exaggeration. Suffused with a golden glow, it’s a unique visual feast, where every shot is a delicately composed painting. It’s not perfect, however: It’s far too long, and each sequence runs too long. And Robin Williams is not only obnoxious but embarrassingly out of place. On the other hand, Thurman’s air-dancing Venus scene is wondrously perfect. Ultimately it’s an exhilarating film: a glorious triumph of imagination over reason, and storytelling so vivid it transcends mundane truth to become timeless Truth.
  • Best Terry Gilliam Movie, in my opinion

This is one of my favorite films by this director. I know many enthusiasts will note Brazil as his best, but this film is quite amazing. Brazil is great and dark. This film is playful and the darker moments are balanced with levity. If you like a film that embraces a surreal landscape, artful absurdity, and capitulates into a rare form of sublimity.. this film is for you.

Amusing and realistically cast and costumed and coifed characters. It's an over the top insanity. Whimsical fables portrayed so authentically you think you must be tripping. JSL
