  • Not the movie you think it is

The trailer misrepresents it as a movie about romance and music. In fact, the first half of the movie depicts a heart wrenching death of a child from leukaemia, and the second half uses that death to launch an ideological rant against God, an emotional stem-cell research appeal, and ends with a neat pitch for euthanasia. Not my idea of a fun movie for a Friday evening.

  • Hits close to home

This was the heaviest, saddest movie I have ever watched. If you’ve ever lost a loved one to cancer or similar disease it hits very close to home. You’ve been warned. I gave it 5 stars because of how close it came to the expressing the feelings of loss and anger and ultimately despair.
  • Best movie you never heard of

I was blown away by this movie. A sad and tragic tale which is wonderfully told thru different time clips and it’s stitched together with some wonderful blue grass music. If you love movies that make you think and feel you will enjoy this movie. If you want something mindless with a happy ending this movie is not for you.
  • It’s good, but deeply Sad. Would have not watched it if I knew...

It’s very well made, and I agree it’s much like “Once”… but the topic is way too sad. I would have rather not watched it.
  • Just like a bluegrass song

This movie grabs you with its melody, and then crushes you with its story. I think it’s one of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen, and one of my favorites.

This was one of my favorite films of 2013. The music alone makes it worth watching, but the characters seep under your skin, leaving viewers mystified that they found performers with such musical and acting talent. Every scene, every nuance, every note, every plot twist, and every word is masterfully portrayed as the film magnificently explores questions of faith, certainty, and the value of life.

Best film I've seen in probably a decade. An intense and courageous emotionally realistic life journey, of which not one second is diminished by subtitles. This film manages to evidence the strength of vulnerability, the beauty of tragedy, the soaring heights and suffocating depths- the rich bravery- that human love calls from within the soul. ps- I would not recommend experiencing this film with anyone you are not completely comfortable crying in front of… there will be tears.

This small gem is great filmmaking. Powerful story, grabs your heart, your gut and your mind while you are tapping your foot to the music. Marvelous story, masterful direction, great music. It's Belgian, but American. It's tragic love, passionate living, and spiritually uplifting while taking you down to the basic questions of human existence. Love hurts. This film takes you there. But you'll value the journey.
