Tonight, they will all face its evil. Directed by Michael Mann (Manhunter), this cult-classic is a one-of-a-kind gothic thriller combining elements of horror, romance and the supernatural, in a World War II setting. I had heard about this movie being worth checking out, and had recently watched The Viewing from Guillermo Del Torro’s collection… If you liked The Viewing, and have enough imagination to compensate for this movie’s problems, you’ll dig it and should add to your COLLECTION. I’m glad I own it now. If only the director were allowed to release the full version, it’s pretty obvious the proper cut was belligerently butchered, but in some ways this adds to the dreamlike quality of The Keep. The setting is great and very much reminds me of a map from Dark Souls or Resident Evil, in the best possible way—if you’ve played these games you’ll absolutely recognize what I mean; especially in the final shot. Also, I hate being the guy to call this movie “Souls Like”….but….well, it just is. It reminds me very much of what Miyazaki said about how he was inspired by, as a kid, having to fill in gaps with his imagination when attempting to read English fantasy novels. This exercise of imagination led to the trademark storytelling style of Dark Souls (1). After watching this movie, the main hero/villain combo are sticking with me in my thoughts, and I’m going to have to pick up the books they’re based on. Also, the music is really something, and creates a unique and imposing vibe. Again, very much like The Viewing

This movie is not for the Star Wars crowd. It’s stylish with amazing cinematography and it’s for adults Not cgi/shoot-um-up teens. I saw it when released years ago and it stayed with me all these years. Apparently the director had a big war with the studio during production so apparently we get about 1/3 less movie than we should have. The quality of this transfer is pretty poor so I’ll wait for an HD version if it ever comes. I’ve researched sources for this film and there was a fairly rotten VHS tape years ago. Also a laserdisc was released in the proper wide screen aspect ratio with better quality but Prices for that version are through the roof. There was also a DVD release several years ago but again with a very poor transfer. Many critics hated this movie at the time of release and the director was even disgusted with the release of the time but sometimes films are ahead of their time.

This is a very atmospheric horror movie. Not only do you get a dreamlike story but you get the music of Tangerine Dream and even "Gandalf" (Ian McKlellan) stars in this film. Bunch of Nazis disturb an ancient evil which gets loose to take revenge. The climax is when a guardian (angel?) arises to fight the evil. I saw this a long time ago and so glad to find it on iTunes. Definite Buy!!!

One of my all time favorites that needs remade with the kind of budget the original should have had. Great story, acting and soundtrack. Will never understand why this doesn't get the good attention it deserves. Classic horror that every true horror fan will appreciate.

Forget about any bad critics around this movie. It’s a classic. From 80’s movies I like it a lot. Michael Mann did well despite of the bad sale on that time.
