Description

In Fit to Fat to Fit, 10 professional fitness trainers accept a challenge to gain weight in order to learn what it’s like to lose it alongside their obese clients. In 2012, professional fitness trainer Drew Manning recognized the disconnect between him and his clients who were out of shape. They claimed he couldn’t understand what they were going through. His response was to purposely gain 75 pounds in order to understand the struggle to lose it. It was the hardest thing he’d ever done but it changed his life forever. As these elite trainers gain weight, they will document the radical effects of watching their healthy bodies deteriorate before their own eyes. After four months of gaining weight under medical supervision, the trainers will rejoin their clients and together, they’ll begin a four-month transformation from fat to fit.

I find the commentary on how being overweight affects family life very insightful.

I hate to admit that I got a tiny bit of sadistic pleasure and at the same time some tears seeing JJ struggle as he got fatter. I’m fat now and I’ve also been gym freak like JJ. It’s good that he and the world have a (blink of an eye) to see it’s not just, “Oh, yeah, eat less calories and expend more.” Naturally thin people have no idea that’s it’s a physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual struggle when you are fat. To me the show was riveting because I’ve been on both sides.
