Description

A spellbinding mystery of identity, illusion, and deception unfolds against the turmoil of post-World War II Germany in the stunning new film from acclaimed director Christian Petzold (Barbara, Jerichow). Nelly (Nina Hoss), a German-Jewish nightclub singer, has survived a concentration camp, but with her face disfigured by a bullet wound. After undergoing reconstructive surgery, Nelly emerges with a new face, one similar but different enough that her former husband, Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), doesn't recognize her. Rather than reveal herself, Nelly walks into a dangerous game of duplicity and disguise as she tries to figure out if the man she loves may have been the one who betrayed her to the Nazis. Evoking the shadows and haunted mood of post-war Berlin, Phoenix weaves a complex tale of a nation's tragedy and a woman's search for answers as it builds towards an unforgettable, heart-stopping climax.

...it is one of the best films I've seen in a long time. It is an incredible shory and truly earns the genre thrill (er). My only regret is renting this movie, this one should be owned. So you can return to it, again and again. Watched a second time, immediately after the 1st watch. I.... never do that!
  • A snoozefest!

I can not understand all of the great reviews. Yes, it was a portrait of a woman's experience during a horrible time in history. But besides being sad and depressing, on every level it was boring and made no sense. Do yourself a favor and skip it!
  • Great Plot

Wow. Quite a movie. Grim, stark, low budget but that lends itself to the subject matter. I wish one plot twist hadn't happened but it's not my movie. Europeans have an incredible capacity to think out well-conceived, clever plot lines. Hats off to whomever thought this up. I totally suspended my disbelief; unlike critics I don't think the plot was "implausible" at all.
  • Into the Past Where Truth Hides

A real suspension of disbelief is necessary for this story in film form. Nina Hoss is a good actress and creates a character that we care about. The story goes beyond another Auschwitz survival tale. It's a tale of betrayal and loss. But the pull of the director is to the unbelievable, not the betrayal or loss. It just never come up to a good film. Wrong plot.

Must see film. So amazingly beautiful as the story from the past unravels. The ending doesn't disappoint.

I don't understand why this movie is not more notable. It's a true master piece.

How is this movie so great if one doesn't speak German?

It has been a week since I saw this movie and it continues to haunt me. It’s a film that comes close to perfection, with a central performance by Nina Hoss that is about as finely and delicately nuanced as I’ve seen from any actor. Her performance is matched by the razor-sharp eye of director Christian Petzold who understands how to capture the kind of longing that gets under your skin. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie.
  • A Wonderful Surprise

This film should be considered a 'must see' for anyone interested in a time in history that changed everything. It's set in post-war Germany and between the cast, the crew and the director, this movie reminds me of that wonderful line in The Avengers, "When I went under, the world was at war. I wake up, they say we won. They didn't say what we lost." It's as true for the survivors in Germany as it was for the rest of the world.

Lugubrious. Absurd premise. That's why peeps think it's deep.
