Description

Laney is an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband who plays basketball with the kids in the driveway, a pristine house, and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the façade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness and its crumbling effect on those she loves.
At the core of I Smile Back’s power is an indelible performance by Sarah Silverman, who reinvents herself as a dramatic actress in the career-defining, intensely layered, and heartbreaking role of Laney. Deftly directed by Adam Salky (Dare, 2009 Sundance Film Festival), I Smile Back is at times darkly humorous but also harrowing and unflinching as an authentic, humanizing portrait that offers no easy resolution for a damaged woman struggling to come to terms with herself.

As someone who deals with depression every day, I can tell you this is an unflinchingly honest depiction of what it can do to you. It may not make sense to people who haven’t experienced it, but it’s a very complex disease with complex emotions attached, all of which Silverman portrayed perfectly. It’s important to have movies like this around and I’m glad it’s out there.

After spending 5 bucks to rent this movie I think Sarah Silverman owes me dinner. I had a real hard time sleeping before this movie started! Just one bad movie!

Nothing happens in this movie at all. There is absolutely no point and no climax.

As soon as I read "Laney is an attractive..." I realised the synopsis was for a different movie. This one stars Sarah Silverman.

This film is not for immature people, a film about depression - addiction - sex - family . Great acting in a very intensive and self-destructing atmosphere - keeps you till the end with an element of sadness and melancholy. If you have experienced something similar - I recommend to watch and learn ….

If you are looking for a nice movie that will leave you smiling don't watch this. Go watch something else that is easy to like. I really enjoyed this movie because it kept doing the opposite of what I expected from your normal movie. Each twist I didn't see coming and in the end I loved that the producer/director kept saying "screw you" to the audience. If you like warm fuzzy things this isn't for you but if you really just want to sit back and have someone tell you a story with no rules than watch this. Sarah S does a great job. I was really taken by her character....who is a horrible person....but she made it feel so real. I've thought about this movie several times in the two days since I watched it.....which I don't say about many movies these days
  • Literally the dumbest movie ever

Little or no plot, no character development, and no point. Just plain depressing and pointless.
  • The movie isn't great, but Sarah is amazing.

The movie wasn't that great actually, but I watched it because Sarah was just THAT good in it. I enjoy her humor but this is a completely new side of her, and I hope she does something again, I'd definitely check it out.
