Its a perfect setting for a creepy horror film. But wasnt scary at all at least for me. It begins right in the deep woods of ancient Ireland. The only thing was there wasn't much if any of a story. You assume that the husband is a most likely a scientist probably a biologist studying the medeval forest. They live in a very old house in the Irish woods. And that is really all you know. They could have expanded a lot on the story. So you are sort of left clueless about what the monsters are or any of the legends. The only thing I am aware of is that England, Scotland and Ireland have a lot of ancient druid beliefs about the spirits of trees and sacred places deep in the forests that many people believed in before Catholisism took ahold of Britain. Anyway maybe better to rent first, then if you like it buy it later. Again not bad if you scare easy.
Artistic and true to Irish folklore

The story is beautifully told with fantastic atmosphere, fantastic creature design, and a intricately designed book that is accurate to old folklore about the fae folk and their horrific, mischievous ways. Not a religious movie, but a great and well told fantasy horror film with just the right amount of suspense. I was really impressed and it definitely sticks with you. Keep in mind that back in the day these things were believed to be true. There's a reason antique baby rattles were made of iron. ;)
Predictable but Scary Nontheless

It's been a while since a true creature flick came out...a good 30 years if we're talking about good ones. This movie definitely makes the list of classics.
Psychological Terror…Irish Style!

I am not much of what passes today as a “horror” fan. I prefer movies with intelligent, psychological content, as well as monsters. If we cannot relate to the actors on a personal level, who cares if they get eaten, dissolved, dragged underground, zapped into good by alien death rays, and so on. This movie does a great job of setting us up and establishing precisely those sorts of connections … before ruining the “happily ever after” aspect of the protagonist’s lives.
Yes, it is a little predictable, but the story’s mythological setting is somewhat unique and more true to Faerie stories than some Hollywood franchises.
It is scary, but not a slasher film (thank the gods!), but does play on the most frightening theme of all, a theme we’ve seen in the original THING, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and the first ALIEN movie, all of which were psychologically “terrifying’ films because the worst thing that can happen to anyone is … well … I don’t want to spoil it for you? : )
Not a GREAT film, but a solid film deserving of a solid 4 stars. Great acting, spooky settings and some aspects of it’s monsters are erie enough to get get a few hairs rising on the back of the neck. OK, it’s neither Hitchcock nor Ridley Scott, but if you want to get creeped out and are in dark mood, it is worth a rent.
Scary Movie!

this is a really good movie that is scary and evil at the same time, but also keeps you wondering whats going to happen next

I hope this is a sign that horror still has a hope to be original, frightening, and creative. It is a rare occurrence that I am on the edge of my seat. This movie is worth seeing.
Had possibilities. Great pratical effects but week script

Had great possibilities. The pratical effects were great but the script was weak and the characters , whole well acted, did many stupid things. Too many why are you doing that go do this. Why aren't you tellling her about that. Just needs to flesh the script out to give the characters more to work with. Pay the attention to the people that you did to the practical effects. Also did not like having an infant to constantly worry about and again a good script would emphasize that more and continously try to get the infant out of peril. I hate when youngsters are put in peril for no reason and is especially hard when the adults do stupid things. Loved the pratical effects, the setting, the feel of the film but script very weak.
I wanted to like it

Ever since I opened Brian Froud’s book of faeries I was enchanted by this Northern European folklore and some of it, while beautiful, was also hellish and terrible by design. I appreciate the artistry and creation behind the creatures but… I think they belonged in another film. Their visual, although good, was out of place… I didn’t think I’d agree with the other reviewer, however, there is this zombiesque /alien quality to these monsters that did not feel appropriate. I think the setup for this movie was perfect, really nice build up… but it just didn’t work. It fell apart and became less interesting as it went along. If you like this genre and theme check out the Swedish film The Troll Hunter, its more interesting.
Worth Watching

Just got done watching it and loved it!! I'm a huge horror fan and this one is done in a creepy clean way; but still amazing. The special effects and makeup were above and beyond excellent.
