Description

As their parents head out for a date in the city, the three young Thompson children - Jacob, Christopher and Sally – immediately take to their new babysitter Anna (Sarah Bolger, Into the Badlands, Once Upon a Time), who seems like a dream come true: she’s sweet, fun, and lets them do things that break all of their parents’ rules. But as the night creeps along and Anna’s interactions with them take on a more sinister tone, the kids slowly realize that their caretaker may not be who she claims to be. Soon it’s up to big brother Jacob to protect his siblings from the increasingly nefarious intentions of a very disturbed woman whose weapon is trust, and whose target is innocence. Featuring a tour-de-force performance from Bolger and its three young leads, EMELIE is a multidimensional, nail-biting thriller that asks the question: how can you put an end to horror after you’ve already let it in?

  • The people who liked this film were fooled by the sountrack

This is an absolutely horrible film. The plot had the potential to be intriguing, but the script never developes the characters or the story, so it never feels like the plot starts or finishes. The reviewers who gave it good ratings almost certainly did so due to the emotional impact of the movie, which is entirely generated from the background noise, rather than the story, the directing, or the acting. The movie feels tense, but if you pay close attention, the tension is there not because the story captivates the viewer's attention, but because they dubbed in very uncomfortable, disconcerting noise: there is low frewuency warbling, high pitched screeches, reverb, and distortion. If you don't notice that's playing in the background, you can be fooled into believing that your discomfort while watching the movie is because of the plot... but don't let the cheap studio tricks pull the wool over your eyes. It's a lousy film with a lousy story. The sound effects are creepy, but when you pay attention to the sound effects, they just reveal the film to be much too cheesy for any appreciable enjoyment. AVOID.
  • Should be retitled "Home Alone 5—The Babysitter's Disturbed"

Terrible script, unsophisticated plot. Starts off ok but quickly devolves into a mindless series of what are meant to be shocking scenes (which by the way are all featured in the film's preview). The last 10 minutes literally plays like a "Home Alone" movie with the young protagonist defending his family from the evil babysitter using clever tricks.

Very happy I rented this one. You will find yourself holding your breath from start to finish. Excellent cast and direction. It almost reminded me of The Shining in that it takes its time but really gets under your skin.

Eerie at first. Then boring. By the time they explain the opening scene, the impact is lost. And finally, a very cliched wah wah wah.
