Description

Enter the dark and foreboding world of Chet Zar, where apocalyptic industrial landscapes are inhabited by disturbing yet beautiful monstrosities. Sometimes gruesome, occasionally funny, but always thought-provoking, Zar’s art is as enigmatic as it is frightening. But who is Chet Zar, and why does he like to paint monsters? These are the questions at the heart of this new documentary by Michael Correll.Zar is an influential figure in the Dark Art Movement. Born in 1967 in San Pedro, California, Zar was the family prankster. With a passion for horror films, an innate urge to create bizarre artwork, and a superhuman work ethic, Zar seemed to be made for the special effects industry.During his time in the film industry, he designed and created creatures and make-up effects for such films as Darkman, The Ring, Hellboy I & II, and Planet of the Apes. Even more well-known is his work with the band Tool. But despite his success, Zar became disenchanted by the artistic compromises he had to make, and, with the support of author Clive Barker, Zar decided to pursue his passion for monsters by painting them.‘Chet Zar: I Like to Paint Monsters’ is an opportunity to take a journey into the mind and life of Zar. Delve into his experiences in the film industry, his transition from early special effects into the world of computer animation, and, ultimately, his evolution into the distinctive artist he is today.

Not much that this movie doesn’t have. It’s hard to find entertaining and informative material on subjects like dark art and this one I believe to be amongst the greats. Once you have seen this movie I suggest checking out the dark art Society podcast and getting more in-depth info on the movement and the artist.

Being a fellow artist and Cannibal Flower alumni, I’ve been aware of Chet Zar for quite a while. I casually followed his career and I always liked his work. Following a visit to Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, I saw a couple of original paintings on the wall and decided to look a little deeper. On that afternoon, I felt like I was pulled into a world that I didn’t want to leave. Chet Zar has a drive and dedication that shines through with each layer of oil paint he lays down. His work in it’s simplicity, which are basically stream of consciousness monster portraits, open up narratives into his imagination. The documentary “I Like to Paint Monsters” reveals more of the narrative and ties in his paintings to his personal life. For example in the movie it’s revealed that Chets biological father was a fisherman and not always around when he was growing up. His 2010 monster portrait “The Strange Fisherman” is tied into that revelation through creative editing and gave me an even deeper understanding of his work. Another revelation is that Chet worked in Hollywood as a Special Effects/Prop Designer/Make-up Artist for many years, which channeled and focused his monster obsession and gave birth to his Fine Art career. Its nuances and insights that make this documentary compelling and something that I’ll watch again. As long as Chet Zar keeps painting, I will look forward to exploring more.
