Description

An unholy force takes root in an expectant mother's womb in this eerie, dread-inducing shocker. Privileged, nouveau-eco-hippies Louise (Ellen Dorrit Petersen) and Kasper (Peter Christoffersen) live off the grid in a remote home in the woods. Unable to conceive, the couple arranges for their immigrant maid, Elena (Cosmina Stratan), to act as a surrogate mother in exchange for payment. But as Elena becomes mysteriously sicker with each passing day, fears mount about what may be growing inside her. The debut feature from director Ali Abbasi is a stylish, atmospheric plunge into primal terror.

Settled down with my pregnant wife to watch a new scary movie (this was the newest and most interesting sounding one iTunes had to offer) and almost wish I hadn’t. A pregnant woman can be scary enough as it is - this was kind of like Rosemary’s Baby meets It’s Alive - we love horror films but I haven’t slept well since. Definitely worth a look (I won’t spoil the end but have to say it is definitely worth it)
  • Very disturbing.

The last scene was the most peculiar.

This film is the purest definition of slow burn, and with that term I mean that you can feel it ignite under your skin slowly as it draws you in and becomes increasingly unsettling as it builds to a finale that will finally engulf you. The actresses are excellent and it's beautifully shot. In its ambiguous evocation of horror without the cheap thrills so many of these types of films might rely on, it really is a fascinating watch. Check it out.
