Description

Ukrainian-born 'bad boy of ballet' Sergei Polunin became the Royal Ballet's youngest ever principal dancer at age 19. But two years later—at the height of his success—he walked away from it all, resolving to give up dance entirely. Steven Cantor's Dancer tracks the life of this iconoclastic virtuoso, from his prodigal beginnings in the Ukraine to his awe-inspiring performances in the U.K., Russia, and eventually the U.S., where he went viral after David LaChapelle filmed him dancing to Hozier's 'Take Me to Church.' Yet beyond celebrating the raw talent and wild ambition of Polunin, whose sights are now set on Hollywood, Dancer considers how wealth and success may not be enough when it comes to finding personal and professional identity.

His story is heartbreakingly sad. A child working so hard for his family. A family willing to give up everything. The outcome is astonishing, but in retrospect so predictable and understandable. The dancing is beyond description. An excellent film. A point of reflection about why we do what we do, and at what cost.

Anyone that rates this less than a 5 star should check themselves. This is inspiring and will push an artist to want to be a little better at their craft. I rented this for $5. Should have spent the $10 because now I'll spend $15 to rent once and own. :) Seriously, this is an introduction to a tremendous artist! Watch it.

As a yoga instructor and a former ballerina, this movie deserves 5 stars for so many reasons. It depicts the pressures people face, it gives both perspective of audience and subject and most importantly is directed in such a way from start to finish that you just can't stop watching.

Great documentary about the sacrifices people make in order to achieve greatness. Incredibly intimate and raw with moments of incredible dancing that will leave you breathless. Highly recommended.

I will give a two, but it should have been a 1! sick of the ego centric b.s. which goes with this movie. So, what, the people who are not in ballet have also NOT made sacrfaices or nor been great, nor accomoplished incredible feats of professionalism? Such boredom to see this documentary, to think he did anything remotely special to many other people. Ok, hurrah, he walked away from fame, or from the profession, blah blah. I am sorry, but hardly worthy of all the glitter and praise. Personally, i am sick of seeing such people get this praise. Why not make a film about his parents, if you really want sacrafice. and just think, he knows how to spread his arm and hop, gracefully of course, across the stage. pathetic to be honest.

What I found most breath-taking about this documentary is witnessing Sergei's dance moves from his archival footage. He is such an incredible dancer. That paired with the heartbreaking story about his family's sacrifices to get him to where he is today made the film especially touching.

I was infatuated by him and his life. What a beautiful documentary. Skillfully done, and was moved by the genuiness of his struggles that for some do exists in its own individual way. An amazing dancer to watch and I am so glad his life was a documentary form. So glad.
