Description

Neil (Michael Johnston) is an introverted, questioning high school freshman. Lacking any real-world friends, he’s forced to work out his issues through the private erotica he writes about the popular sci-fi character, Vanguard. When he’s exposed in class, the slightly-older Julia (Hannah Marks) comes to his defense. An erotic fan fic writer herself, Julia pushes Neil to publish his stories to an online “adult” forum, where they quickly grab the attention of the site moderator, Denis (Michael Ian Black). When Neil is invited to present his work at a Comic Con live-read event, he has to face the fact that Denis’ interest may be more than simply professional... much like his own feelings for Julia. With a strong supporting cast including Missi Pyle (Galaxy Quest), Jessie Ennis (Better Call Saul) and Angela Kinsey (The Office), Slash finds the humor and humanity in places most of us would never dare to look.

This movie is clever, poingnant, funny, sad, entertaining, mature yet still fun. The writer clearly understands the absurdities and joys of the coming of age experience. This is not a chic-flick. This is not a rumpus comedy...it's a really good movie. (This coming from a guy (me) who prefers sci-fi movies and bizarre comedies with characters acting unpredictably). If I liked this movie...most everyone will.

We rented this movie because of its ratings. I can't imagine why anyone want to give this movie more than 1 star! Everything is bad - story line, acting, camera work. There is nothing worth watching - and I am quite tolerant when it comes to movies. I am upset that I did not watch the trailer first - because it is so bad that I feel I deserve my money back! It didnt even take me 5 minutes to realise that I wasted my money.

I didn't know what to expect when I rented this movie, but wow. So incredibly good. Not hard to fall in love with both the female and male leads, as they figure things out as two kids just trying to make sense of their feelings and their talents in an adult world. Highly recommended.

AAaaah there we go! Liford really finds something special with this one. If you like off-color humor, nerd culture and you aren't lying to yourself when you tell people, "I'm not homophobic!" Then you're in for a treat.
  • Delicious!

A coming of age movie on steroids. It’s a 2016 version of Sixteen Candles but way more complex, way more interesting, really deep and so very funny. It’s beautifully authentic, awkward and uncomfortable wrapped in bacon with a touch of Sci-Fi special sauce. Clay Liford, this is PURE PERFECTION. P.S….here’s a riddle for ya… “Interactive, TV and 1999.” ;) Shout out to all of our back in the day Interactive TV production gang! So very proud of you Clay, congrats to you. Absolutely loved it! Wishing you even more success.
  • Preview is misleading

This is not a bad film, but it is nothing like the preview on iTunes. If you saw the preview and thought this would be like Napoleon Dynamite meets Trekkies meets King of Kong, then you fell for the same trap I did. This is just a quirky kid story with a few gay tweeks to it.
  • Fresh take on coming of age story

Saw this in the theater and really had no idea what to expect. I thought this movie did a great job of hitting the right notes -- funny without being mean, and sensitive without being corny -- in telling the classic teen coming of age story from a new perspective. Very enjoyable.
