Description

A gripping nonfiction thriller, Robert Greene’s KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE follows actress Kate Lyn Sheil ("House of Cards," LISTEN UP PHILIP) as she prepares for her next role: playing Christine Chubbuck, a Florida newscaster who committed a shocking act on live TV in 1974. As Kate investigates Chubbuck’s story (long rumored to be the inspiration for the classic Hollywood film NETWORK), uncovering new clues and information, she becomes increasingly obsessed with her subject. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE is a cinematic mystery that forces us to question everything we see and everything we’re led to believe.

The only positives about this movie: Some cool recollections of how TV journalism worked in the 70s, seeing how much Sarasota has changed in the past 40 years, and the fact that I was cured of insomnia for at least one night. If you enjoy having a PC actress shame you about your passion for live violence, you might like this movie.

It's not a documentary. It's purposefully shot to look like it just so the director can call you a horrible person at the end for wanted to see blood and guts. They did a disservice to Christine Chubbuck's life and death, as well as the seriousness of depression and suicide, while turning in slow, B-rated acting, just so they could be self-congratulatory and call the audience out after two hours of dreadfully boring material. Not artistic. Not edgy. Just not good. Not even worth .99¢ in a bargain bin.

If you don't understand art, don't bother watching.

In the end it seems like this was more about an actress trying to find out if she has any talent, rather than dig into the sad circumstances that led to this woman's public death.
  • Only if for a personal take on a story historically relevant yet largely uncovered.

For me this was a "B" grade effort and I'd be a little annoyed if I'd spent more than .99 cents. Interested initially in the story and by the actor's process, waiting for the transformation became tedious and unrewarding when it becomes evident that Kate is poorly cast or simply doesn't have the chops to deliver. Apple's ratings can certainly be misleading.

What a disappointment. It seems like they tried to make an actual movie here but after they saw how horrible it was, used the outtakes and behind the scenes footage to create a documentary.

The movie was very sad that a woman had to take her own life, not to mention its very disturbing. I could only imagine what she was going through, depression is real and unfortunately at those days they didn't have a word for it, or medicine to help people in this state. I'm glad that there are people who are telling her story as best as they can. It's really so sad.

An interesting mix of fictional drama, a journey to understand a troubled woman and a honestly scathing look at people and our fascination on the worst our society produces. While being a bit didactic in its delivery of its message the movie does make a valid point. The news does sensationalize violence and depravity it does it because people by and large feed on it. You have a woman whose career wasn't noteworthy but is remembered for what she did and not who she was. If it weren't for her suicide people wouldn't have known or even cared about her today. That shows that the tragic and gruesome end of her life is what ultimately interests people. I will not say I am beyond it. I remembered when I heard about her years ago there was a part of me that did want to know more. To see footage of her interviews and telecasts and yes even the final footage of her. Part of it was morbid curiosity but part was the fact that her death while tragic was I hate to say this but oddly poetic. If her death was her way of really showing society how sick and twisted it is then she succeeded. The fact that movies and documentaries about her and her death are made 41 years after it had happened proves it.

It starts slow, then gets slower, and finally, eventually, it just ends.

Price is too high for the content And poor acting . Not working with much here. This needs to go on the 99cent rental list quick.
