Description

Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) is an unstable young woman with a checkered past of obsessive behavior. She secretly moves to Los Angeles to befriend Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen) — an Instagram "influencer" with a fabulous artist boyfriend, a camera-ready terrier, and an array of new products and brands to promote to her followers. After Ingrid adopts a Taylor-made identity for herself, her attempts to prove she's BFF material are underway — that is, until she meets Taylor's obnoxious brother Nicky, who threatens to tear down her façade. Also starring O'Shea Jackson Jr., Ingrid Goes West is a savagely hilarious dark comedy that brilliantly satirizes the modern world of social media and proves that being #perfect isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Boy oh boy, these reviews. Apparently, movies that have the potential to make someone, somewhere feel uncomfortable aren’t allowed to be made anymore. Not sure where these people are living but films with dark subject matter have been created since the dawn of cinema. And this one wasn’t even that dark. Just because the subject matter makes you uncomfortable doesn’t make it a bad movie. If you watched the trailer, you knew the premise. How else do you think they can portray someone using social media to become a stranger’s friend without it coming across as a little creepy. Overall, it was well written and brilliantly acted by all leads. And it was funny. The way social media is sardonically represented throughout it is spot on. Those Instagram captions? I’m embarrassed to say a friend of mine has used at least one of them. There are probably more Ingrids out there than any of us could ever begin to anticipate. You’re probably friends with one. Some of you probably are one. And to the people saying Ingrid wasn’t relatable to them...um isn’t that a good thing? I don’t think Michael Myers and I have too much in common but the original Halloween is still one of my favorite films. People take things way too seriously these days. It’s a movie. It’s made for entertainment. Not all entertainment comes in the form of a Disney movie. But for the record, I find Bambi to be a lot darker than this movie. Lol imagine the film, The Accused, being made now. Jodie Foster wouldn’t have even had a chance to accept that Oscar or to represent victims who deserve to be represented. Because it’s uncomfortable subject matter. And that one’s a true story. The lengths Ingrid went to, to become Taylor’s friend, were funny. Her sadness behind them, not so funny. Movies don’t always have to be all or nothing. And to the dude who said he wouldn’t let his kids watch it- smart move, Bud. It’s rated R.

This movie is trying to achieve a lot. It's a satire of social-media culture, but it's not snide. It depicts a complex lead character and asks us sometimes to laugh with her and sometimes to laugh at her and sometimes to be afraid of her. There are moments of great tenderness, but also moments of shocking intensity. It's easy to imagine a bad version of this movie: a movie that is almost instantly dated in its critique of technology and kids these days. But Ingrid Goes West succeeds in its ambition, mainly because of the solid writing and Aubrey Plaza's remarkable performance.

This movie is actually very smart compared to vapid people it portrays. Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen's acting is what really saves this movie. How do I put it, you either really like this movie or you don't. There is no inbetween on this one. This movie is a genius commentary on our society's social media usage today and how toxic it can be to someone's well being. Ingrid Thorburn is a mentally unstable woman who places social media on a high pedestal to how she models her life. She becomes obsessed with Taylor Sloane who feels like any Instagram influencer you can find today. The plot basically follows Ingrid slow decent into madness with her social media obsession with being BFFs with Taylor Sloane. In the end Ingrid ends up getting her own following by posting her failed suicide attempt. So she finally gets the validation that she was looking for in the end even if it came at the almost cost of her life. I liked this movie because it really did show how dependent some people have become getting their life validations from social media and how everything isn’t always what it seems like it is online. Elizabeth Olsen is very convincing playing a shallow Instagram influencer. Aubrey Plaza plays crazy just well enough to be likeable in the end. Like I said you either gonna love the message it sends or you’re gonna hate it because it doesn’t really follow a cookie cutter Hollywood story.

A dark yet comedic film, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Aubrey Plaza's awesome performance made me laugh, cry , and cringe (but in the best of ways). Elizabeth Olsen's portray of your typical "California girl" was extremely accurate. The movie definitely caused me to think about the presence of social media in today's society, while still being light-hearted and funny. The twist and gripping last scene of the film was a feat of its own. It was definitely worth the watch.

Obsession in social media is without a doubt growing faster than I think anyone expect. Having said that- I can not believe this movie 🎥 glorifies trying to commit suicide on the web for a group of followers. Even though it’s not done for that reason- I find this disturbing since so many ppl are obsessive about looks, ppl they know, clothes, celebs etc and so on. This flick has absolutely no reasoning to the plot except to showcase a mentally disturbed young girl and try to make a comedy of it. How irresponsible to put this out without showing the true consequences and only getting what she wanted- totally whacked. Don’t let your kids watch this. I don’t recommend it to anyone who’s even the slightest off balance. Absolutely terrible 👎. And shame on the producers, writers and cast 📱
  • A very intelligent movie

It’s more of the genre of satire and requires some social understanding to appreciate this movie.

I would rarely take the time to watch a movie with this premise; because I am too old for social media at real time. But the reason why I decided to watch was because of the star who I have seen in a couple of roles. She is a shining star. I think that her abilities are just becoming. Overall the film was a ‘B’ movie with little besides her acting within a stress level of slow rising as you feel her strange obsession. If you have OCD you will find more depth than the overall film provides. Love seeing cool new actors make any story better.
