Description

When teenage Medina (Maika Monroe) moves with her family to the picture-postcard perfect paradise of Palos Verdes, California, they seem headed for a happy new chapter in their lives. But old troubles soon catch up to them, as Medina's parents' marriage disintegrates, her mother (Jennifer Garner) spirals into an emotional freefall, and her twin brother (Cody Fern) turns to drugs. Caught in the middle of it all, Medina must rely on her inner strength to become the stabilizing force in her family, while finding refuge in a new passion: surfing. Set amidst the sun-kissed beaches and crystal blue waters of the California coast, The Tribes of Palos Verdes is a stirring look at how life's greatest challenges forge who we become.

  • Touches the very core of a teenager’s being

The intensity of this movie traveled to a very selfish place where parents only cared about themselves. This gave a true highlight of how much an adolescent is in dire need of their role models; their parents. It’s a time where emotional and cognitive development are at it’s most sensitive place. Tragic sums up the movie in almost every corner- but hope still stand in one corner.
  • A well-acted film that ultimately leaves you in an amotional void.

This is definitely a well-acted film, with amazing performances by Jennifer Garner, Maika Monroe, and Cody Fern. There are some interesting story arcs going on throughout, and it's beautifully filmed. Nevertheless, about 2/3 of the way through I realized that I just didn't care about any of the characters. Despite the emotional depth of the actors' performances, there was no emotional connection with the characters and me. And so by the film's end (an ending that was far too abrupt) I felt like I had just wasted my time watching the lives of the three main characters fall apart, never really caring. With a film like this, that's the last thing that should happen. Should the actors be considered for awards for their performances in this film? Absolutely. Should the film itself? No. This is the perfect example of a film where the total is far less than the sum of its parts.

Jennifer Garner is so good that she scares me. For all those that surf, I'm your tribe and you, mine.
  • Beautiful looking...doesn't work

I had high hopes for this film. Looks beautiful, pretty good acting, but very uneven. Make Monroe is very good. Looking forward to seeing her in more films. Jennifer Garner is good in spots, but overacts like crazy. She is miscast, constantly screaming about her unfaithful husband liking "skinny girls." Meanwhile, she is in perfect shape. It makes no sense. There is a reason this film was not released in theaters...

A beautifully film about the intimacies of family life and soulful connection between 2 siblings. The brother and sister are captivating as is Jennifer Garner. Great scenes of the ocean and haunting music score. Poetic dialogue. Loved it!!!

This movies captures the beauty of California and surfing. Each performance is outstanding from Jennifer Garner’s authentic turn as a narcissist parent to the wide eyed nuanced performances of both of the teen actors. The movie will stay with you, make you think, and appreciate your loved ones.
