Description

When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

This movie is so ponderous and brooding with self importance it just bogs down into a meaningless slog for its entire runtime. I barely managed to stay awake hoping that it would eventually go somewhere, anywhere. Unfortunately, like the worst independent movies, it just meanders until it ends and you’re set free.

The acting was great! Toni Collette is award worthy. There were some creepy scenes at the end that were cool. There seems to be a lot of people who defend this movie with their soul, and others who hate it. For me it was just ok. A one time watch.

Hereditary isn’t bad but everyone is making it out to be the best horror film of all time and it just isn’t. Long and slow, 95% suspense with little ever actually happening, constant obviously foreshadowing dialogue (SPOILER: mentioning the grandmother wanted Charlie to be a boy and mentioning Joan’s door mat), nonsensical reactions (SPOILER: the father seems less skeptical before he sees actual proof), non-satisfying ending, etc. All of the actors did a fine job though strangely only Toni Collette is ever mentioned despite Alex Wolff giving a equal or maybe even better performance.

And here I thought pretentious millennial horror movies couldn’t get more boring than Midsommar. The only people that find this scary are people who’ve never overcome a challenge in their life. The fact that people find these characters realistic is laughable. This Rosemary’s Baby ripoff is about 45 minutes too long with the dumbest ending in film.

While I went into this blind to just what I was getting into, I came to soon realize that it was sheer brilliance. Unsettling yes, dark, but it does do what it’s made for. It unnerves you but it will linger for years. I believe Ari aster is a brilliant filmmaker in making his own craft. I’d be curious to see what he does next.

Outside the ending (seemed rushed) it’s an amazing and beautiful film!!

This is a brilliant film that delves into the complexities of gender dysphoria suffered by an interdimensional being who finds himself in the body of a young girl. After struggling with the inability to accept his new form, and dealing with suicidal tendencies, he finally gets the support he needs to make the transition back into his cisgendered male form, all thanks to the love and support of his family and followers, and their many sacrifices. Brilliant acting. Brilliant story telling. A heartwarming new tale for the ages.
  • No! Not good. Disturbing, great cast but...

Love Toni Collette, but... No. Let me say the cast was amazing. Everything was great till midway. But I was eye rolling by the end. Too much hype. This was no Jaws or Exorcist!
