Description

Forty years after the death of Elvis Presley, two-time Sundance Grand Jury winner Eugene Jarecki’s new film takes the King’s 1963 Rolls-Royce on a musical road trip across America. From Memphis to New York, Las Vegas, and beyond, the journey traces the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind. In this groundbreaking film, Jarecki paints a visionary portrait of the state of the American dream and a penetrating look at how the hell we got here. A diverse cast of Americans, both famous and not, join the journey, including Alec Baldwin, Rosanne Cash, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris, Ethan Hawke, Van Jones, Mike Myers, and Dan Rather, among many others.

Formerly owned by Elvis Presley, a tempramental Rolls Royce is driven across the USA stopping in places relevant to Presley, Tupelo, New York, Vegas. Along the way the car picks up various Americans some famous, others just regular people, musicians sing from the back seat, actors such as Ethan Hawke and Alec Baldwin add to the tapestry of commentary about the times that Elvis lived in and the decisions that he made, or perhaps were made for him by his sinister and certainly master manipulator manager Tom Parker. The film takes us through the Civil Rights era; an era where Presley, who made such a success from his embrace of 'black' music chose to remain silent when many of his contemporaries marched alongside Dr. King and other leaders. The focus of the film is on the American Dream, and the tale of one very human man who for all his beauty and talent and the manner in which his life was lived etches a kind of leitmotif for where we are now. It is an incredible film, and about so much more than its flawed subject, Elvis Presley.

I rented this based on the Ethan Hawke featurette. The first half hour was about nothing but social injustices against African Americans then and now and how some 'artists' blame Elvis for the same against black artists of the time. Those subjects are important, but don't try to sell them in an Elvis documentary.

How sad, I would love to watch "Rolls" cruising the USA but I don't want to be drubbed with a course inundated with politics and agendas. Oh well.
