What a great sequel that follows Danny and having him deal with his demons later on in his life with the help of a girl who’s shine is magnificent. Rose The Hat is an amazing antagonist as well.

This movie doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Kubrick was a genius! Too bad.

What an amazing film! Well written, engaging, suspenseful and definitely creepy. Have not seen a horror movie that well done in a long while! Used the groundwork from the first movie well, then blew it out of the water!!

Stephen King should really just say, “No!” when someone comes along and offers him a wad o’ cash to turn his books into movies. Many horror fans will declare the following statement to be blasphemy, but most of his books are overrated. Too many of them are sophomoric and he has a tendency to pick “kiddie” names for his villains and his characters too often speak like bad kid show hosts. I think Mr. King has decided that “kiddie” speak in a horror story is somehow the ultimate scare. I find it annoying. “It” was just stupid and the movies were worse. However, a few of his books to make it to the big screen have resulted in movies that are genuinely worthy of high praise. Of course, the original Shining is a film classic deserving of its place in top tier “best of” lists in the horror genre. Oddly enough, King seems to have disdain for that one of a scant few movie adaptations of his work that are bonafide homeruns... he should stick to novels; his instincts about what translates into a good horror flick are terrible. I don’t know how much involvement he had in the making of this movie, but it was either way too much or way too little. It’s a “Sharknado” quality movie that doesn’t deserve any connection at all to the original. If you enjoyed the first Shining novel and revere the Nicholson/Duvall/Crothers movie version, I implore you NOT to watch “Dr. Sleep.” You’ll only risk ruining the original for yourself by getting this boring mess any where near the classic in your own head.

Let me just say, The Shining is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s in my top 5. So, to put it lightly, my excitement for a sequel was immense. I actually put off watching it for quite some time, terrified of my expectations being too high... and I truly regret that decision. When I finally watched it, I fell in love! Danny in the first movie is a bit of a blank slate. He’s young, quiet, etc. Ewan McGregor truly brings the character to life, and you really believe that this is what Danny would be like as a grown up. There’s a heaviness to the character, and you can feel it through the screen. The struggle with alcoholism leads to some of the best scenes of the movie. This is a character based movie, and it takes its time letting you get to know the characters - even the villains! Rose the Hat is one of the most memorable villains I’ve seen in a long time. The new characters are properly introduced, and you spend time with them. By the time the final act rolls around, you know every character and understand their motivation. This movie is respectful to the fans of the movie and the book, and rewards you for loving the original stories/characters. I love every new character, I love the final act, I love the emotional scenes, the unnerving atmosphere, the soundtrack, the cinematography... it’s all fantastic. Don’t expect a modern horror movie, that’s not what this is. This is a disturbing, mind-bending, artistic, character-driven movie. Rewatch The Shining, and then give this movie a watch. It doesn’t try to recreate the first movie, it creates its own story that perfectly ties into the original material. Will be a favorite of mine forever!

I was really hoping to be like “this is so awesome!” But I didn’t get that. The actors were great, and it definitely kept you on the edge at times, but in the end I want wowed. It was just a decent movie. My brother said you’re going to love the end since it goes back to the hotel, but sadly it wasn’t anything special to me. It felt rushed and not creepy..

Doctor Sleep was the criticaly acclamied horror flick to ever come out this year. Doctor Sleep is the sequel to the Stanley Kubrick cult classic The Shining and we follow grown up Danny Torrence (Ewan McGregor) who after he exprienced the horrifying events from the Overlook hotel he lives the high life or so as they say. Then there's this little girl who has the similar power called "The Shine" followed by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) who can take away the souls of "The Shine" from people. Doctor Sleep wasn't my expectations seeing it because of all the negatative reviews this movie has recevied but besides bad reviews and people getting in the middle with Doctor Sleep. In my opinion Doctor Sleep is a film 40 years in the making from the Shining because the Shining is still scary and well shot and now we have Doctor Sleep which is based on the novel by you guess it (Stephen King) and this film not only captures the magic from the Shining but has great performences by Ewan McGregor who does a fantastic job playing the traumatized grown-up Danny Torrence and life now for Danny Torrence is hopeless and wasted from the events from the Shining. There are some problems with Doctor Sleep in terms of haunting visuals and tension throughout. I think that introducing a new villian (Rose the Hat Rebecca Ferguson) that we never heard of in the Shining and Rose the Hat i think is a overrated villian but i like the actress she is played by and her motivation is kinda weak and takes away from the dramatic tension that is placed in the events of the film. When you present new characters into the story that don't have nothing to with anything is fine but don't expect me that introducing new characters is a mind trick (get it!) for the audience to understand. Either way i think Doctor Sleep is a haunting but interesting narrative play on Danny Torrence's exprience from the Shining is told right in this effective horror classic.
