Description

Willy T. Ribbs was the Jackie Robinson of auto racing. Despite being a Formula Ford champion in England, Willy T. had another race to win when he returned to America—the race against bigotry. Many owners, mechanics, sponsors, and drivers in the racing world derisively referred to Willy as “Uppity” behind his back; death-threats, unwarranted suspensions, and engine sabotage followed him throughout his journey in racing. Despite the setbacks, he was an amazing driver and he became one of the winningest drivers in the history of the Trans Am series. The establishment did everything in their power to keep this great driver down, based on his defiant attitude and antics. Through sheer determination, Willy shattered the color barrier in professional racing, becoming the first Black man to race in the Indy 500.

This is a fantastic documentary. Willie T broke the color barrier at Indy and his path there is a story that surprisingly hasn’t been told until now. He was an amazing driving talent and at least now he can get some of the credit he is due! You don’t need to be a racing or car fan to enjoy this story.

This is a riveting and fast-paced documentary that lets you feel the raw emotion and passion of premier race car driver Willie T. Ribbs. His quest for greatness is on full display as he exhibits that greatness at every level. His dreams are sidetracked at almost every turn by xenophobic racism. That racism is the fire that fueled him. Hence he was labeled an uppity N-word in America. In spite of that fact, he persevered and he won. He paved the way for figures such as current reigning F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton. This documentary is worth your time. Hands down.
  • Another great Carolla doc
