  • An experiment that simply DID NOT WORK.

The story was FINE, not the best, but an acceptable addition to the ghibli library of fairytales. The real issue with this movie is the ANIMATION! This movie should have been hand animated like EVERY OTHER GHIBLI MOVIE, whoever decided they needed to experiment with computer animation needs to get their head out of their butt.

Think Dennis the Menace but a cute, precocious young witch instead. One that is intent on getting her way through whatever magical means or emotional manipulation necessary. I mean, the main character’s behavior is ghastly, yes but in the end I ended up loving her because it would’ve been a situation any child would give up in but through sheer hard-headed will, she sticks it out and changes things for the better. The story also just seemed so familiar and I came to find out that it was penned by one of my favorite childhood writers, Diana Wynn’s Jones. A lot of people dislike the animation but honestly, open yourself up to change. The animation is cute and new and very well done honestly. I’m buying the film just to have it when I’m feeling down. Take a chance, stick it out and you might just like the film too.

Story was great, not the best, but great. Animation, wasn’t good at all. In fact it was horrible. Everything felt so flat… it was just a disappointment. This isn’t Ghibli. This is something else.

Studio Ghibli.... Ahhhh, I gatta say I love the story and the ending was cute and a cliffhanger ♡︎ BUT in all their animations I loved the emotions and the general way they animated and did things....like when some one is disgusted/creeped out/scared: the characters would usually have a rapid number of spikes coming from every direction (if that even makes sense) And again studio ghibli is my childhood... and I remember watching all their movies. So it’s pretty obvious that I’d REALLY miss the normal/previous animation Over all great film, I thought all the characters were cute in their own way :) Plz go back to anime animations 🥺 (I’m all cool with trying something new but PLEASSEEEE go back to the original animation)

Overall, it’s spooky and cooky and fun! I can really see 7-13 year old girls loving this movie. I also found myself wishing it were a tv show, as its biggest strength was in the slow build up of snarky affection between the characters. The plot leaves some unanswered questions, but the movie proves to be entertaining despite that. The breadth and variety of character designs is fantastic, especially for CGI. They remain true to what you might expect from Ghibli and then a little more. I also found it reminiscent of Dragon Quest, as well as old pixar titles before undergoing disney’s style-gentrification. Some scenes also seem expirimental in their stretchiness— like the animators tapped into older traditional techniques. I just thought this was neat. It’s a shame how critics can’t let it stand on its own, as they always dogpile the Ghibli movies that break the formula. I look forward to more of Goro Miyazaki’s work, as Earwig shows fantastic potential for where he may take future projects.

I enjoyed the story and the animation reminded me of the spooky god mother movies which was a nice memory for me. Over all good movie.

I really liked this movie, let me start by saying yes I miss the 2D style but this isn’t bad they portrayed the Style of Ghibli well to 3D. I know people have been review bombing this because of the CGI but people might want to get use to it, this movie was made Goro Miyazaki, Hayao’s son he had mingled in some previous films and made one him self but he doesn’t care about the Ghibli studio’s he wanted to focus on landscaping and when Hayao retired for that short time they actually had plans to close the Ghibli studio then Hayao came back. I was surprised to see that Goro was actually working on this film but if he does take over I feel like we’ll see more CGI because it’s easier than the drawn. If we bash this now he might back out and Ghibli could be over, I thought the story was told well and the animation had style to it that was very unique. The characters were very interesting except the little girl came off pretty bratty/spoiled but besides that I like the characters a lot I'm hoping that there will be a second one to carry on the story from the books. As humans we are creatures of habit and don’t like change but if you can get over the change to CGI I think you’ll like the movie. You can blame Disney for starting the trend of killing off 2D animation. Give it a shot I think it was another great story told by the Ghibli studio.

Unlike typical studio ghibli movies, this one is cgi. Still creates the same atmosphere of wonder and enchantment as older ghibli movies. Watched it so many times already. All I can say is give it a chance, it’ll be worth your time to follow the life of quirky little earwig!
