Description

In a career-defining performance, Bill Nighy (Love Actually) plays Williams, a 1950’s London civil servant who struggles to maintain order under mountains of paperwork. Overwhelmed at work and lonely at home, his life takes a heartbreaking turn when a medical diagnosis tells him time is short. Influenced by a local decadent (Tom Burke) and the vibrant Margaret (Aimee Lou Wood), Williams continues to search for meaning until a simple revelation gives him the purpose to create a legacy for the next generation. Adapted by Nobel Laureate Kazuo Ishiguro (Remains of the Day) and based on the classic Akira Kurosawa film Ikiru, Living is “ one of the best pictures of the year”. (David Fear, Rolling Stone)

Had no idea what to expect. Promos piqued interest. Wonderful, thoughtful, endearing movie. Magnificent ending.

This movie was wonderful. It really played to many of the strengths of Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru. Bill Nighy does a wonderful job bringing the character to life.

I loved this movie. Meaning of truly living comes through in Mr. Nighy’s performance.

Thoughtful and moving (and very gentle) update of Ikuru. Bill Nighy is absolutely sublime and should’ve won that Oscar.
  • Rather dry

The previews looked like this was going to be a good movie to watch on a Saturday evening. It was a lethargic somber movie which had a rather slow and somber mood to it. It was also hard to understand the actors due to the recorded volume was too low. I could have gotten more enjoyment from a bag of chips.
  • Sad. Boring. Pointless

Kurosawa was a magician. Without his touch this rendition falls flat. Embarrassingly bad. Unbearable.
  • Bill Nighy’s finest performance.

This film is so understated and beautiful. Bill Nighy has always been such an underrated actor, glad this film got to be showcase for him to give what could be his finest performance. I only wish it were possible for Nighy to win the Oscar for this wonderful performance.
  • Good, meaningful movie, but sad

Bill Nighy is excellent in every role he plays, and Living is no exception. I thought it’d be a lighthearted, playful, and feel-good movie. While this movie is emotionally moving, it’s ultimately a sad affair. The story feels like a long eulogy to a man who wanted to do one meaningful thing in his career. Overall, it’s a good story, but not something I’d like to watch again.
