Novocaine

No offense the fans of Father of the Bride, et al., but this is the Steve Martin I love: a bit dark and wickedly sharp.

Surprised because I actually liked this movie quite a lot, and the critical reviews were awfully iffy... Maybe I'm just not clever enough to find it's faults, or unsophisticated, or whatever. But I loved it - dark but not unsettling, and really not so much a comedy but more of a thriller (but this was to the film's benefit), plus solid performances - I think Novocaine is definitely underrated. Because it's really quite good. And Helena Bonham Carter - talk about underrated. I've recently decided that I could watch that woman do dishes for two hours and still be captivated. She plays her part perfectly, as usual, and even succeeds in actually making an attraction to Steve Martin believable, no small feat in my book. Speaking of Steve Martin, I really don't care for him a lot of the time, but in Novocaine he is terrific. Helena's better, but he really holds his own. Look, Novocaine isn't going to change your life. If you're looking for profound or you have a tendency to be a pretentious bore, this isn't your movie. But if you like being highly entertained for a few hours, or if you're slowly coming the the realization (as I am) that Helena Bonham Carter isn't just an endearingly bizarre dresser, she's also a freaking genius actress - then this movie will make you very happy.

Don't know why they call it comedy it's more like a thriller movie

If you expect this to be Steve Martin's usual knee slapping comedic fare, you will be disappointed. This is a dark comedy and as such does a great job. I am always up for a good dark comedy (i.e. War of the Roses ). Many try and fail; but this one hits the right spot. I thought the writing was good and the performances credible. Good stuff.

they might be a twist... but i wouldn't know about it, simply because i couldn't hang til the end... the characters are just sooo plain and lame, very poor script writing, very hard to be captivated by the story...

Excellent story and script. Great performances and a great twist. I can't believe more people don't know about this film.

Great movie for people torn on dark comedies. I don't like the really dark ones but this is just right. Steve Martin wins in this. Helena Bonham Carter is what you'd expect but that's a good thing for this role. This was a surprisingly winning combonation.
