Description

Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame inductee Prince directs and stars in this sequel to the box-office smash hit "Purple Rain," one of the most talked about movies of 1984. This time around the Kid (Prince) and his rival (Morris E. Day) are partners, together running a nightclub that was willed to them, each with very different ideas of how to run a business. A music-filled treat featuring classic funk superstar George Clinton and pop superstar Tevin Campbell.

All I want to do is see Prince dance and sing. Viewing his gorgeous face is enough for me. Prince is not into directing all the time, this is a funk hip musical for music lovers only. Elvis Presley couldn't act and his movies were considered a flop, but viewers looked for a chance to see Elvis dance, and sing. People if you love good music, seeing Prince dance, gorgeous clothes, and beauty, then this movie is for only the Sexy People.

This is not Purple Rain by any stretch but it's a project at a particular time in Prince's career so for his fans, it's meaningful. Besides, the musical performances are great and the soundtrack is in my view, one of his best. Get the soundtrack if you don't want to watch it.

An absolute car wreck of movie. An embarrassing mess that should have been shelved in the vault. I feel sorry for the casual viewer that might stumble upon this after being inspired and entertained by Purple Rain. This is but a pale imitation with a horrible script, bad acting and horrible (for the most part) soundtrack. Yuck, just yuck.
  • Could have been better than "Purple Rain" had it been in the right hands...

Summary: The storyline is a lot like “Purple Rain”: two band leaders battle for bragging rights and The Kid (played by Prince) is still learning to open up although his family/career struggles still haunt him. This time around, Morris Day has become more business savvy and wants to own all nightclubs within the Seven Corners district but The Kid, who partially owns the Glam Slam nightclub, stands in Morris’s way. You also have Aura, an angelic force, who tries to encourage Kid to make music that is heavy on sex and spirituality but also tries to convince Morris that there is more to life than money, power and women. Pros: Morris Day and Jerome Benton are great onscreen and bring that comedic one-two punch that we all loved in “Purple Rain”. Prince gives us a soundtrack very different from what we’ve heard from him in the past (check out The Question of U, Joy in Repetition, Thieves in the Temple and Still Would Stand All Time) and Morris Day and The Time steal the show with live performances for Release It and Shake. Lastly, Prince does have an eye for visuals (bright colors, foggy backgrounds, close-ups, etc.) and made a lot of what you see in today’s music videos very popular. Cons: Too many cryptic messages made the story and dialogue between characters very hard to follow. Aside from The Kid, Morris Day and Aura, the rest of the supporting cast felt as though they had nothing significant to bring to the story. Most of the scenes are shot on a soundstage in Paisley Park and Graffiti Bridge itself is a manmade prop that and its importance is also a mystery. Overall: Prince took on too much responsibility as the director, writer and star of the movie and the end result may have been better had he had a lesser workload. The diehard Prince fans will enjoy it but the casual fan will most likely not enjoy it. Had this project been in the right hands of a great director and writer, this could have been a good movie...

I love Graffiti Bridge and anything Prince does! For those of you that don't know Morris Day is a parody of the record label that said no one would like Prince songs because of him wanting to sing about spirituality and actually saying God in his songs! I love Prince because of his courage to do what's right and the best as an Artist!
  • The best movie ever

This soundtrack was awesome! The Question of U is still on my top play list! I hope that the Sign O The Times Live movie becomes available here... That would rock!
