Penélope Cruz, Martin Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Danny DeVito co-star in this wry look at an obsessed man who will do anything to make his passion-filled dream life a reality. Gary Sheller (Freeman) is caught in a midlife crisis: dead-end job, depressing life and a deteriorating relationship with his girlfriend Dora (Paltrow). That is, until he meets Anna (Cruz), the girl of his dreams. Able to see her only while asleep, Gary seeks out an expert on lucid dreaming techniques (DeVito) who agrees to help Gary carry on the most satisfying relationship of his life. But as Gary continues to shun reality, his waking life troubles only worsen in this illuminating dark comedy.

I actually watched this movie in error; the cashier gave me the wrong dvd. But I must say, that the money I spent renting it, was worth it ! Never in my life, have I seen a moive that had such a powerful impact on me ! The characters all unfolded gradually, which gave the audience time to embrace each of their qualities. The sexy "dream girl" Anna -- played by Penelope Cruz --seduced Gary -- played by Martin Freeman -- was a delightful add to the movie, infact that was main point of it. The moment Gary begins to dream of Anna, his life begins to crah, as he spends all his time and energy learning about her. Because of this, his marriage to Dora -- played by Gwyneth Paltrow -- crumbles and he is forced to meet Mel -- played by Danny DeVito -- This movie will only attract individuals who can appreciate a "tasteful" film, which focus more on the acting, rather than sexual appeal. The director Jake Paltrow, did an excellent job, and will continue making excellent films. The only down side of this movie, is the utter confusion in before the climax. There are other bits and pieces which left me at awe, because I it lost focus, but it amazingly unravels towards the end. The music in this film greatly complemented the scene and mood. If you do not enjoy the plot, then you should atleast enjoy the soundtrack.

This movie just happened to show on a night flight accross the Atlantic, with me stuffed in the back of a 747, eating great food, and downing a gin and tonic. That said, I loved this movie. At least the part of it where I wasn't running to the WC or whatnot. It is such a hidden gem of a thing... it talks to something relevant in a guy: what you want in a mate vs what you actually need, and what really fulfills. It's a bit of an odd way to come at that story, but it works, and was easy to watch. Not an intense sort of film, but a relaxed commentary on how we mess up, and how we can win. Give it a try.
