Description

In one of the most pristine landscapes in the world, a team working to exploit oil resources of Alaska is tormented by an unseen evil. After one crewmember is found dead, a disorientation slowly claims the sanity of the other members of the team as each of them succumbs to an unknown fear. This creeping dread bursts open when a malevolent wind brings down a plane that approaches the station. Explosions and carnage wreak havoc on the team and all functions fail in the camp, forcing two of the members out into the cold on a desperate bid for survival. As these two journey to find help, they find themselves utterly alone in a world that is unraveling- either they are being stalked by an invisible herd of menacing phantoms, or they are going mad. This chilling supernatural indie drama from IFC is the latest offering from Larry Fessenden, an acclaimed director of intimate horror spectacles.

  • Wish real life environmental scientists were as transparent...

A film with a crystal-clear agenda. Good cast and acting. If the politics were better- veiled it might make for a decent The Thing meets Armageddon meets the Shining knock off. Instead we get a preachy, propaganda film- like "An Inconvenient Truth, but more realistic. I give it 3 stars because of Perlman and because I'm a sucker for movies with a lot of snow. This movie will make for a decent drinking game as there is a lot of dialogue pulled from quotes which have been used on cable news to support the science or to mock it. Watching it while multi-tasking I still caught a half-dozen references.
  • So Funny to See the Talk-Radio Big-Oil Sheep Give One Star

Did I say funny? I meant… really scary. I think it's so amazing how easily led and brainwashed people can be; and you know they have no stake, nor stock, in any oil anyway. They're just rednecks driving their Ford F-150s throwing beer cans at the tv and shooting off their guns. I haven't watched it yet, but I'm giving it 5 stars because if it angers the inbreds this much…. I am going to LOVE IT!!!

I saw the first 5 minutes of this movie on TV and was so impressed with the aesthetics--the cinematography, the rhythm, pace, and movements of the cuts--that I said to myself "go ahead and buy it on itunes to enjoy on my computer." I thought that I had finally found a director--previously unknown to me--from whom, for years to come, I could expect new and wonderful things. Boy, was I wrong. This movie is like a bad cross between An Inconvenient Truth and The Shining. Unless you're an Al-Gore-Koolaid-drinking, cyclical-climatic-history-denying, petiole-oil-wearing mindless lib., you won't enjoy this movie. Its a shame because you have some good actors, editors, and a great A.S.C. (who--by the way--should find a new director worth your talents and never work with this political hack Fessenden again). This truly is liberal progressive propaganda. There is a context in which you may enjoy this movie--watch it with an ironic eye; It does have a campy quality to it whenever someone starts screaming in fear that the permafrost is melting (which, by the way, happens cyclically about every 15,000 years). Don't waste your money on this.

This movie was what I had hoped for: unique storyline, great main actors (finally!), wonderfully entertaining (for both men and women), a touch of sci-fi, beautiful winter landscape, and consequences of man's mutilation of Earth. I will recommend this to all.

I didn't watch this movie thinking I would get some big lesson on Environmental Politics, I watched it because it is a thriller and totally enjoyed it as such. I found the premis to be timely and relevant. I also found the idea interesting that oil is partially created from fossilized life that has gone before and the furthering of that theory the movie imparts. I found it thrilling, spiritual, spooky, and entertaining so enjoy it for what it is. If you want, this movie will give you something to think about- if you don't, it wont! (Everything about this movie was great except for the actor who plays the character Ed who is somewhat difficult to watch.)

I don't understand the '*' ratings...this was definitely not amongst the worst horror movies I have seen this year. It was not a 'slasher' or 'saw' type movie. It was an eerie, stark, picturesque movie. We were captivated and had goosebumps throughout. The acting was good, the scenes, shot in Iceland, combined with the music (check out the soundtrack) was haunting and somehow beautiful. Good watchable movie about the earth getting the last word.

This film does not entertain nor does it make any serious statement about environmental or energy issues. Save energy, save the environment, and don't waste electricity on this film!

This movie is outrageous. Fessenden makes me want to guzzle more gasoline, emit more toxins, burn more paper, and cut down as many trees as possible until we have no other option than to go to Alaska for oil. If this is a 'great metaphor' for what we are doing to the environment, I say "bring it on, nature." If this movie scares you, you can go bow down at Al Gore's green, carbon footprint-proof feet. With the continuing release of films like The Last Winter and Shyamalan's The Happening, I am going to have to start screening movies in order to avoid the indigestion I get from watching too much environmental propaganda.
