Half Past Dead

In the early 2000's Steven Seagals career was in flux. He had starred in a couple of bad movies in which some were straight to Video affairs. He attempted a comeback and kinda pulled it off with Exit Wounds. Exit Wounds was not a great movie but a decent action flick produced by decent filmmakers. Half Past Dead was suppose to be the follow up to Exit Wounds and the rule to a follow up film is that it must be better than your previous one. Half Past Dead did not accomplish that. The film starts out really well for the first five or ten minutes then delves into the ridiculous from there on out.The dialogue is not that great and the pairing of Ja Rule and Seagal really doesn't fit. The biggest flaws in this film is the direction and editing. This film does have decent footage to work with, and could have been more intense and serious like any prison action flick should be but the director and editor lean more on the comical elements when putting this together. They also rip off the Matrix stylized aesthetic and the movie suffers heavily from it. Seagal does manage to have a couple decent moments, mainly with the fight scenes but overall could have been better. After this film was released in 2002, Seagal would not appear in any feature motion picture, released theatrically in America for over 8 years.
