An adaptation of Fulton Oursler's best-selling book the "Greatest Story" follows the life of Jesus Christ, played by Max Von Sydow. The large supporting cast includes Dorothy McGuire as Mary, Claude Rains as Herod the Great, Jose Ferrer as Herod Antipas, Charlton Heston as John the Baptist, Donald Pleasence as Satan, David McCallum as Judas Iscariot, Sidney Poitier as Simon of Cyrene, Telly Savalas as Pontius Pilate and Martin Landau as Caiaphas. Even Robert Blake as Simon the Zealot, Jamie Farr as Thaddaeus, and motorcyle-flick veteran Richard Bakalyan as Dismas, the repentant thief, are well-suited to their roles.

    Surely storytelling has evolved since biblical times. The Jesus story is a classic no doubt, but the supernatural elements have aged poorly.

    This is such a classic; retelling of the life of Jesus; my only concern is where are the Special Features and iTunes Extras for people to watch? This is really annoying when the Special Features appear in the Home Video releases of movies but not on iTunes.

    This movie is very moving. All the actors such as Max Von Sydow, David McCallum, Jose Ferrer, and Charelton Heston do a perfect job. This movie gets its point across by words instead of violence. Judge it for yourself.

    I'm 12 and we watched this in my CCD class and it was really good that was why I searched this to see if they had it but don't be fooled by the preview making it look cheesy it was very high tech for the 1960s and it could over pass any movie today my mom said she saw it in theaters and it moved her and it did the same to me it is as a kid my age would say it "AWESOME"

    I purchased this movie over a year ago and it still will not let me load it in my library!!! It shows up as a purchase but there is no way to load it!!!! I know It is a good movie, now if I could just get it to load!!! Any suggestions???????

    I gave it a 3 only because of the content ... But the passion of the christ , or jesus of nazereth would be better and I would purchase Please bring more christian based stories like one night with the king, left behind series , fly wheel , fire proof and others ... please add more

    George Stevens film The greatest story ever told was the first film of a Biblical nature I remember seeing as a child. Having watched it again recently I find it a very moving film about the life of Christ, beautifully filmed and very sincere, it can be a little too reverent and slow at times, and some cameos from big name old stars may distract a little but all in all a very well made well acted film that deserves to be seen.
