Description

Barbara Novak (Renee Zellweger) hits New York City with her new book Down With Love, a feminist manifesto on saying "no" to love and "yes" to career, empowerment...and sex. As Barbara's revolutionary tome rockets to the top of best-seller charts, she becomes the target of ace journalist Catcher "Catch" Block (Ewan McGregor), ladies' man/man's man/man-about-town, who is determined to take her down. While Catch's best friend and boss, the neurotic Peter MacMannus (David Hyde Pierce), tries to rein in his star writer, he haplessly pursues the object of his own affections; Vikki Hiller, Barbara’s brilliant and feisty editor Vikki plays tough in a man's world just like her protege Barbara...but will they end up unexpectedly in love?

Proves that it's possible for a movie to be adorable, funny, and feminist. What the early 60s should have been with modern hindsight. Both McGregor and Zellweger wear those delicious 60s fashions so well!

This movie is great, much better than the trailer would suggest. Dialogues are super sparkly (for me that is a must). The movie simulates esthetically the late 1950s (1960s) setting, fashion and mores. It is a smart parody. It is truly truly enjoyable. All actors deliver solid performances with a great comedic taste. I watched it twice!

...but perhaps that's the comedic point. And, the film does make fun of itself and romantic comedies of the 60s, which is fun parody. Some of the costumes are over-the-top but fun nonetheless. I'd say this was better received back in '03 when it was released because the public's laughter was tapering off over Austin Powers. Now that we're completely spoiled however by the sophisticated Mad Men series, it's difficult to go back and enjoy Down With Love as much as we did the first time around. Watching it this second time felt as if I was watching a hybrid mix-up of Hairspray, Mad Men and Austin Powers. Watch it if you're inclined but understand that you'll be looking at it afterwards as one does a piece of chocolate candy: momentary deliciousness followed by a dietary and dental regret 'hangover'.

Down with love was mediocre - lukewarm, but not bad. I definitely would not recommend it to someone who loves movies. Neither main characters were very likeable, and I didn't believe in their romance. The ending was a bit ridiculous, not in a fun way.

This movie is outragously funny, stupendously charming and above all this SPECTACULAR! If you love movies with humor, love and a twist at the end...kick back with some popcorn and a soda and ENJOY! I knew that this was going to be a great movie when I saw Ewan McGregor was in it. I think (and this is my opinion) that he is one of the sweetest, most charming actors of all time. He is above all my favriote actor. (And he is SUPER dreamy!) Believe me you will not be dissapionted when you see this movie! As this review is titled... BEST 9.99$ I HAVE EVER SPENT!
