Description

After a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in a remote part of the ocean floor, a team of divers on a prototype underwater oil rig are pressed into service by the U.S. Navy in a rescue attempt. When a hurricane cuts off contact between the surface and the underwater depths, the crew begin to see evidence of a strange, possibly alien intelligence at work. While Chief Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) bickers with his ex wife and boss (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the Navy commander begins to grow increasingly paranoid about the mysterious alien life and threatens to use a recovered nuclear weapon to destroy everything.

This isn’t a review of the movie itself. I’ve never seen The Abyss before and was thrilled when the 4K version was announced. I missed my chance to see the rerun, so I was looking forward to seeing it here. I know that the preferred version is The Special Edition, so I was happy that it was included. That is, until I bought this only to find out that the Theatrical Edition is the only one in 4K. The Special Edition is in 1080p and doesn’t have its Atmos track. That is the entire selling point of this and I was devastated to find out that it’s not included. It’s not even a separate purchase option like so many other alternate versions of movies are. It still looks fine, but there’s a huge difference between it and the theatrical. Guess I’n just going to have to wait till March for the Ultra HD Blu Ray instead.

Looks and sounds amazing in 4k. One of the best 80s/90s digital versions I’ve seen!
  • Does include the extended version

After purchasing, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this product does in fact include the superior extended version of the film. The item page on iTunes does not mention it, but when the movie is launched the special extended version is listed as an option on the main menu screen. After almost 25 years of being limited to watching my the Abyss on DVD, I am beyond ecstatic finally be able to watch this great movie digitally and in 4K!
  • Almost Great

Almost Great I'd give the original release five stars if the film’s ending arrived exactly 16 minutes earlier than it does. An unresolved "European” ending is far more satisfying than the dippy happy ending that’s also riddled with some atrocious special effects.

Love this movie. The special effects hold up even 30 years later. I will purchase this when the special edition is available. Special edition contains an extra 28 minutes of footage. Until then my dvd copy will suffice.
