Robocop 2 is one of those sequels that gets cooked up really fast by its producers cause its predecessor was successful. The filmmakers do try their best to match the visual style of the original film and they do come pretty close to achieving that aspect, but the atmosphere of the script is way off the mark. The script is the biggest problem with this film and definitely is the smoking gun for it feeling rushed. Robocop 2 is a monster brawling flick disguised as artistic sci fi like the original was. The whole movie is basically just one big set up for the Robot battle at the end. Their was an original script for this film penned by the original writer of the first film. It also had the original director and crew to be involved as well. It would have Been about Robocop being badly damaged and de-commissioned only to be resurrected in a dystopian future many years later. Corporations have taken over and left the underprivileged to live poorly and inhumane. Robocop would have been that lone gunslinger who brings law to a lawless town and inspires humanity and Revolution amongst the people. Ultimately this idea was rejected and not allowed to be refined. The studio rushed production and hired Frank Miller to write a script that was more superhero friendly for a wider audience. Robocop 2 has its moments but it never truly becomes the sequel fans would have wanted. It definitely would have been a better film had they been more patient with its original filmmakers and their ideas.

This is actually a very good movie. You just have to look past the hyperbole and the humorous, satirical directing that obviously didn't give the movie the seriousness it deserved. From a technical standpoint, the movie has it all: memorable characters, action, a message to the viewer, and one of the most elaborate and coherent plots we've ever seen in a movie. Films with far more simplistic story lines have won Academy Awards. What's more: although this sequel that didn't spend much time providing us with more information about Robocop, it quickly and efficiently gave us some, and seamlessly picked up where the original left off. Better directing could have made this a classic sci-fi action film.
