Description

Jake, a lovelorn fishmonger who has spent nearly a decade trying to win back his ex-girlfriend gets involved in a romantic case of mistaken ethnicity. It's been eight years since Jake's girlfriend left him, and despite the fact that she's now married with three children, he refuses to move on. Fed up with their depressive pal's unwillingness to let go of the past, Jake's friends set him up on a blind date with a beautiful Italian woman from Boston's North End. Though Jake is convinced that such a woman would never consider dating a non-Italian, a quick crash course in how to fake it may prove just the trick to helping him learn to love once again.

I actually enjoyed this comedy, funny characters and an interesting (but not very credible) story. Not sure why people didn't like it, maybe Italians felt offended?!
  • Unique, funny, romantic satire

This movie was very funny. I took it as a satire- making fun of how many people there are out there that can't get over their ex- put them on a pedestal just b/c they screwed up a relationship & feel guilty, like their life would have been just perfect if they could have her back. When in reality, there was probably a reason why you screwed up- a Freudian slip, acting out on what your subconscious knew all along. So, if anyone didn't think past the obvious- that the fish monger isn't really chasing after his ex on a daily basis, then you can see that he represents a ton of men that hang on to the past to an idea of what he imagines would have been a perfect relationship, instead of loving the one you're with. The vet sticks around b/c she figures that he'll realize one day that its just an idea, not his ex, that he loves. That once he realizes that, he'll hang onto her with the tenacity that he demonstrates he has with love. Everyone really does want to claim to be Italian- so much so, that they don't want to point out when someone accidentally confuses them with someone who is. It's flattering- "Wow, you think I'm Italian?" You think I'm good looking, hotblooded, loyal, well connected to my family.......

After the first 20 minutes you've already seen the rest of the movie. Totally predictable and disappointing story-- hint, there is no plot. Character arcs are nonexistant. Prepare to want your money back.

in fact my grandfather married an Italian, and acts more Italian that she does. and this movie does have a lot of the stereotypes Italians face, and I've heard a lot of the stereotypes without the aid of this movie. the guy is a jerk, but it's fitting that he picks a porn-star-like girl as his "soulmate"

I managed to make it through nearly an hour of this movie before I finally turned it off. The characters make decisions that don't make any sense, they're boring, and so stupid it's painful. I would spend 10 minutes thinking the plot couldn't possibly get more banal or ridiculous and then the next scene would prove me wrong. An extremely attractive, 20's something guy stalks his ex-girlfriend from 8 years ago every day even though she's now married with 3 children? The ex-girlfriend and husband don't get a restraining order? The new "girlfriend" decides to continue being friends with him anyway, even though she can't stand him, just because he's cute?! Stupid! A 10 year old could have done better at writing and directing this movie. Save your money and especially your brain cells.
