Description

Screen legend Gregory Peck ("To Kill A Mockingbird") brings to life C.S. Forester's classic nautical hero, Horatio Hornblower. Hornblower battles the French and the Spanish forces during the Napoleonic wars, but also finds time for romance in this spectacle from director Raoul Walsh ("White Heat," "High Sierra"). Co-starring Virginia Mayo ("The Best Years of Our Lives"). Leonard Maltin calls this an "exciting, well-produced sea epic.

I didn’t think I’d find a fun swashbuckler to top The Black Swan, but this did exactly that. After finally viewing this gem, I now know why it’s Gregory Peck’s fave. A huge Peck fan, I took a chance and so glad I did. As soon as it was over, I was ready to watch it all over again. This film is packed with clever scripting, colorful dialog, tender touching human moments. action galore with perfect pacing. You’d never know it from the first 10-15 minutes, but what you do get is the character Peck lays the solid foundation for latter storytelling. Virginia Mayo’s character has so much depth. She and Peck have restrained chemistry that sizzle. The battle scenes are grand. Why needs CGI? Fantastic supporting cast. So much fun. Rivals the staple Captain Blood, but in this reviewer’s opinion, outwits it and Peck is a more convincing lead than Flynn. This film is so re-watchable. You won’t regret the purchase. I certainly don’t. ✅

Here's a chance to view Gregory Peck in what he once said was his favorite role, as Captain Horatio Hornblower. The plot follows the events of three of the novels in an abridged but no less exciting pace.
