Six Degrees of Separation

You will like. You will like. Stockard Channing, whose own social background reveals itself in this marvellous re-interpretation of her stage role as Ouisa Kitteridge, Upper East Side matron, is outstanding in this elegant pastiche of a film. Even the usually mannered (yet endearing) acting of Donald Sutherland seems tailor-made for his role as an art dealer who is always closing, especially since his coop-and-doorman lifestyle depends on millions, and not thousands to keep it going. And what can one say about the astonishing performance put in by Will Smith. This is the role he was born to play, and despite his rumoured diffidence on set to go full Monty during the gay scenes (such as the kiss), he will have you mesmerised as much as the main characters were with his enveloping patter. If there's any negative, it's that as soon as the "reveal" happens, the film slides into melancholy, and loses its chic edge. But this also reminds us that behind those Fifth Avenue apartments' windows, not all is fruit baskets and champagne.

Will Smith and Stockard Channing really deliver in this film. A great story with accurate representation that makes you think.

Will Smith does a great job but the other children almost ruin the movie by their terrible acting

Fred Schepsi's adaptation of John Guare's play (based on the real-life exploits of conman David Hampton) is a scintillating, intelligent and witty rumination on class, generations, race, sexuality, the American dream, the emigrant dream, and J.D. Salinger. Stockard Channing (who originated the stage role) is revelatory as Ouisa. Donald Sutherland is both foreboding and charming as Ouisa's husband, Flan: the brief scene wherein he describes his dream of the third grade is quite possibly his most memorable minute on film. The real discovery, of course, is Will Smith, making his film debut here, a strong one. He's the reason I pronounce "bottle of beer" the way I do. If you haven't seen this film yet, see it, at least to understand my references. You'll be glad you did.
