  • Could have been better.

Overall, the movie wasn't bad, but I felt like there were too many missed opportunities and it left me feeling fairly neutral about the movie as a whole. Biel isn't the best actor around and Firth should have had a bigger role as his character was probably the most complex and interesting of all. Thomas was superb, as always. This is an OK "rainy day nothing better to do" movie, but nothing that will make a lasting impact.
  • Not the biggest Biel fan, but I liked it- it's better than "ok"

I'll admit it- Jessica Biel may be "hot," but as an actress, she isn't one of the best. However, I really thought she did a great job in this movie. "Larita" is supposed to stick out like a sore thumb in comparison to the more "restrained" British characters in the film. I thought it was a classic moment when her husband asked her if she had to be so loud and she replied testily, "I'm an American, I'm supposed to be loud." That gave me a good laugh, because as a people, yes, we Americans ARE kind of loud, and we stick out wherever we go. And Biel did a great job "sticking out." I thought she made "Larita" exactly what she was supposed to be- a daring, spontaneous, beautiful, fun loving, dangerous(?) mystery. "Larita" wouldn't fit in no matter what, because her character is supposed to not only stick out, but steal almost every scene she is in (as "the glamorous actress from America"). I think Biel pretty much nailed that, and yes, perhaps her looks helped, but there are plenty of gorgeous models who have tried acting and sucked, so Biel is not the worst thing that could have happened to this movie. They needed an actress who is drop dead gorgeous who can also act a little, and they got one. Yes, I'm biased against her because I don't think she's a great actress, but this is the best work I've seen from her and she did a great job. I have steered away from her movies in the past (I've seen her acting in a couple of movies and hated it) but this may make me reconsider the next time. She did NOT, as someone said, RUIN the movie. I'm surprised this movie did not get more notice. There are some great actors in it (Colin Firth? Kristin Scott Thomas? Hello!) and they played their roles very well. Firth and Scott Thomas are hilarious as a terribly mismatched couple, and Scott-Thomas does a great job making you despise her. She runs the house with complete disregard for anyone. I loved to hate her. This movie is romantic, funny, and free spirited. I'm not sorry I caught it on television and I'm not sorry to have purchased it. I'm only sorry not to have caught it in theaters. Oh well. I will be watching it again. And there aren't too many movies I would watch twice!

it's not bad.. the scenery is pretty epic.. the movie's plot is quasi-original.. j.biel at times I feel is "overacting" & my boy c.firth really needed a bigger role, or at least more lines.. he was HILARIOUS... the one redeeming quality is it's not over the top sexual or vulgar like a lot of comedies these days, which try WAY to hard to be "provocative" or whatever.. if you are a fan of british comedy though, you'll probably really dig this one... as for me, I thought it was a good flick but nothing I would own or watch again... SPOILER the ending is great..

Not crazy about this one. Loved the clothes, the landscapes, some of the acting, but the editing…..the way it was put together…….not good. It doesn't flow and it frustrated me. The relationship that grew between Colin and the blonde……just didn't make sense. I purchased this one because I love English movies and thought it would be one I would want to watch over and over…….nope……..once was enough. I was disappointed. Oh well.
  • Jessica Biel is the worst choice for this movie

This is lite hearted english country estate film wth great lines but some poorly delivered by JB but gosh she does wear the hell out of that dress. I put this up there with my fun Oscar Wilde films, though it does not have all their polish. Well worth the cost for sharing with friends and dinner.
  • Kristin Scott Thomas is brilliant!!!

This is a fun movie - Jessica Biel plays her part really well (looking amazingly like a young Faye Dunaway) but for me it was Kristin Scott Thomas who made this film. Her disapproval of her son's American floozy oozed from every pore - she was brilliant!!!! It's fun, you don't need to concentrate too hard - just sit back and enjoy :)
  • Loved it!

I found this film to be very entertaining. The acting was excellent, and the story was filled humor, wit, and scandal. I would definitely recommend this movie to those who enjoy romantic comedies.
