Description

Chili Palmer, a cocky and smooth Miami loan shark/obsessive movie buff, is asked by a Las Vegas casino to go to Los Angeles to convince schlocky exploitation-film mogul Harry Zimm to make good on his gambling marker. Once Chili discovers that "I don't think the producer has to know too much," he sees no reason why he shouldn't be getting some of that action as well...and, besides, being a success in the movie business is a piece of cake for those schooled in more traditional criminal pursuits. Based on the 1990 novel by Elmore Leonard.

So far the best movie adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel is the unaccountably underappreciated Jackie Brown. But this is the second best. (Out of Sight runs a close third.) It's relaxed, light, bouncy fun from the first minute through the closing credits, with umpteen beautifully woven sub-plots making fun of/tipping the hat to Hollywood and gangsters and Hollywood gangsters all at once. In fact, it's maybe the best movie about making movies since The Player. Travolta was still rolling high from his Pulp Fiction comeback -- the way he bops up stairs on the balls of his feet is brilliant body-acting. It's maybe Delroy Lindo's best movie ever, and definitely Rene Russo's best and hottest. Everyone else has a ball making fun of themselves, bopping along to an excellent John Lurie soundtrack. Soderbergh certainly had this movie in mind when he made the very similar Ocean's flicks a few years later. A whole lotta fun, and just a little too slight to be called great.

  • Great movie, but is iTunes copy as great?

I was about to buy this absolutely great movie, but then noticed that the iTunes description lists this movie as full screen, even though the original aspect ratio was 1.85:1. I am well aware that Apple often displays incorrect information about subtitles, etc, but I only buy movies in their original aspect ratio, so I need to know if this is in error or not. Can anyone confirm that the iTunes HD download is in widescreen format?

Not my favorite movie, but I have to admit there is a lot of classic lines.

Hollywood has churned out so many mobster films, it's hard to dig through them all and find a really great one. This is one of the gems that has been too often disregarded. If you like Pulp Fiction, you're sure to enjoy this flawless, thoroughly entertaining film!

This movie is a total classic! It's a hillarious farce about crime and the movie industry. A must see for anyone who likes comedies.
