Description

From Ricky Gervais, the award-winning creator and star of the original BBC series "The Office" and HBO's "Extras," comes a new romantic comedy. "The Invention of Lying" takes place in an alternate reality in which lying--even the concept of a lie--does not exist. Everyone--from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street--speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark (Gervais) suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

It’s one thing to be an atheist; it’s a whole other thing to build a movie around it.

I find it disturbing that most people who gave this one star are just disturbed by its viewpoint of "the man in the sky". The voiceover at the start stated that this was an alternate world. It's very well written, and touching. It's not a fairytale and I love it, just very thought provoking. As I've come to know, the last thing most Christians want to do it think deeply.
  • An undervalued movie - watch & learn

This movie is, in my view, brilliantly funny and relevant. Funny because the actors manage to create an atmosphere of sickening artificiality in a fictive world where people don't know how to lie, relevant because it reminds us - at least those of us who are ready to listen rather than stick to religious dogma - how easily we forget to be critical when dealing with religion. The movie is an intersection of a love story and a religious provocation, and isn't that a great achievement in its own right? I have the impression that most of the negative reviews here focus on one particular aspect: The mocking of Christianity. I agree that Christianity is being mocked, but in an intellectual way: By showing how much most people believe in absurd tales from a story book (just think of Gervais standing with the two pizza covers like Moses and his ten commandments), this film should make people think about the power of religion. Of course Gervais focuses on the Christian myths, the film takes place in a country which is - at least for now - still predominantly Christian, so it would make little sense to target Buddshism or Islam. Fact is that Western civilisation only developed after the Europeans managed to curtail the hitherto ubiquitous power of the catholic church, which denied truths established by science long ago. Only then did we start to move materially forward. This film succeeds in ridiculing belief in religious myth, especially by making fun of God as he/she/it is often portrayed by religous people: As some omnipotent, potentially violent creature who punished humans even though he/she/it created us in the first place (according to the pious). Watch it without prejudice. Happy viewing.

OMG you religious nuts get off your high horses and realize this is just a MOVIE. I'm a religious person but can tell the difference between the truth and a funny movie made for entertainment value. This was a great concept followed by a you don't have to be cute or rich to be a great person. I thought this movie was very entertaining and funny throughout. Great job by the actors also bravo👍🏻

Its a decent movie. Now if you read all the reviews you might not think so…..if you take out all the reviews by easily offended Christians than this would be a 5 star movie.

I thought this movie was great. The comedy is dry just as Ricky Gervais normally produces. Some find dry comedy funny and others don't. If you're into British comedies then you'll understand and enjoy the comedy that Ricky was going for. The best part of the movie is not the comedy though. It's meaning of life kind of stuff intricately woven into the comedy. Ricky wrote, directed, and acted marvelously. Not all will understand the genious of this work but it is definately genious. And if you have ever wondered what the truth is in the universe, who God is, how it all works, etc. then you will enjoy this light hearted yet profoundly deep journey questioning what we've been taught and exploring the truth within all of us.

You are not a religious freak! I don’t mean just religious, Id assume you could take a joke and realize its just a movie. But if you are one of those over the top anything that even hints at something off with Christianity then I guess don’t watch it. Or maybe use it as a teaching tool to realize that its simply a movie. Taking the concept that he made up heaven cuz his mom was dying as an insult is as silly as someone who doesn’t believe there are aliens in space being insulted by a movie like Paul. Its a funny movie, a GREAT concept, and the supporting cast does a good job. Its not the best movie every made but its fun and anyone who isn’t a little off their religious rocker should at least get a laugh if not really like it

I liked this movie because of its banter and comedic timing. I feel that it could have been better if it didn’t spend so much time poking fun at religion (cheap laughs from a specific audience). Then again it is a British comedy, and what would that be without blasphemy–Monty Python anyone? I still hold true that Ricky Gervais is a comic/storytelling genius.
