Description

From Christopher Guest -- one of the creators and stars of the hilarious rock 'n' roll satire "This Is Spinal Tap" -- comes this "mockumentary" about the small-town community of Blaine, Missouri, as they prepare for the 150th anniversary of their town by putting on an elaborate stage play. Hoping to create a triumphant work, they pin their hopes and dreams on an outrageous former New York theater director who promises to deliver a famous Broadway producer in time for the premiere. Starring Christopher Guest ("Best in Show," "The Princess Bride"), Parker Posey ("Superman Returns," "A Mighty Wind"), Eugene Levy ("A Mighty Wind," the "American Pie" movies) and Catherine O'Hara ("Best in Show," "Beetlejuice").

I am not overstating things when I say this is the most underrated movie I have ever seen. I saw this with a couple of friends at an independent theater in college. It never received wide release like the rest of the movies in this series of "mockumentaries," such as Best in Show, This is Spinal Tap or A Mighty Wind. However, this movie is my favorite of the entire group. It might not have been in wide release because it rips on small-town life in middle-America, and the studio probably thought it might not go over among the people at whom it is poking fun. Christopher Guest's character "Corky" appears to be based on the flamboyant character he played as the coach of the first Olympic men's synchronized swimming team in the classic SNL skit featuring Harry Shearer and Martin Short. Fourteen years after this movie came out, my friends and I still recite lines from this movie on a regular basis, just like we do from our other cult favorites like The Big Lebowski and Lost in America. Best of all, it's a cheap rental! Rent it today, and you will want to buy a "Remains of the Day lunchbox" tomorrow. (Just watch the movie and you'll get the joke).

The musical numbers at the end of the movie make this movie. Guest is great, and ten bucks is a great price for this movie.
