Small Town Murder Songs

Almost nothing to the plot in a movie that goes almost nowhere. It examines one relationship and then ends. It is really not fit to be considered a feature, but is more like a preview trailer, or a short film. Not worth the price as you get so little back. 75 minutes long, and that includes several scenes dominated with long, loud folk songs and imagery, rather than plot development. For a murder mystery it has zero suspense.

I wanted to love this movie, but ended up feeling like a gullible buyer who'd been duped into viewing a 90-minute cinematic infomercial for some of the most annoying, LOUD, and repetitive music to ever dominate an alleged "film." There's minimal dialogue and a (b o r i n g) non-plot interrupted every 4-5 minutes by an infinite series of montage landscape scenes accompanied by twice-the-volume maddening music. A Midwestern setting and "Yaahs" in the sparse dialogue do not succeed in evoking anything near a Coen brothers film. The Coens are seasoned storytellers, and there's simply no story here. Any good photographer with a wide-angle lens can capture beautiful landscape scenes, but photographers don't subject viewers to audio advertisements that ruin the storytelling experience. I love "artful" films, but this is neither artful nor a film. It's the worst I've seen in many years.

this is a heavy movie, with little dialog and tons of emotion... it has a great sound track with good cinematography...

I have a long attention span but when the movie is so poorly written and the performances beyond boring and the loud, unnapealing music carries the movie…who cares...

Interesting movie as far as the dynamics among the characters. It is definitely an art house sort of movie, so not for everyone. I understand that they were trying to create a Twin Peaks sort of flavor, but the music was overdone. Instead of complementing the mood in the scenes it was intruding and distracting.

...kinda light on plot and dialog. It's the music fan's movie. Not much more here than some really stiking and interesting music juxtaposed with some sort of striking cinematography. The actual substance in between montages is pretty boring and un-eventful, though the locals of this small town do have a certain tepidly eccentric charm. You can probably find a better movie to occupy your 1:15.

I saw this movie in a small art theatre and I fell in love with it. The score was amazing, the acting was great, the dialogue was spot on, and the directing was great as well. This is a movie that holds your attention to the end I got my money's worth when I saw it.
