Description

How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie "House" (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. Never before available on home video in the United States, it’s one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years.

A gleefully and shamelessly goofy horror romp. Think a Dario Argento movie, but embellished with cartoonish campiness. If not for the story or characters, watch it for the wildly creative visuals and schizophrenically wacky tone.

To the film-pedantic this would seem like a mess; a casserole of flavours and textures that don't mesh well, but you're missing the point that firstly, it's 40 years-old, and secondly, it's supposed to be a mash-up, a fever-dream, a head-trip, and thirdly, it's also meant to be tongue-in-cheek, ridiculous, darkly comical and yes, innovative: so many textures, genres, tricks and styles are utilised here, it's mesmerising. I loved every second of it, was totally entranced, amused, enthralled, and how nice is it to see real, fresh beauty with imperfect teeth and real bodies, mixtures of 1970s western and eastern "kawaii" fashion? LOVE IT!
  • "Gorgeous!" Instant favorite movie.

What a film. BRAVO. Just finished my first viewing. I had heard things about this movie for years. I didnt know I would ever see it. I was expecting a lot from House and now feel blown away by how far this movie actually beat my expectations. The quality of the picture surprised me. I thought it would look more outdated. Thank you to Criterion for the restoration work. The movie itself doesn't feel antique at all. It is fresh and new and completely transporting. The characters seemed to float through the movie as if in a dream. The whole thing is surreal. Indescribably beautiful. I could not reccomened this movie enough. For the rest of my life I will return to this movie at special times and re-watch "House." And, I will savor it.

This movie is a high speed, constant turning roller coaster. Variety of used techniques, playful montage, music and humor work together to amaze viewer again and again, till the very last scene.

Surely people can't be serious with the comments they are writing about this movie. it was completely horrible and a total waste of time. If you want to waste 2 hours of your time sit and watch ants work. Doing that is far more interesting than this movie. WOW...
  • What.

This is the most bizarre movie you will see. But its so fantastic in every way possible. Its even better when you look up about the history behind it.

Love it. There is nothing this movie won't do. It's either most genius thing ever created or one big acid trip. Either way, it's amazing.
  • Enchanting. Funny. Horrifying.
