The movie lends no depth to the subject. Basically it advises you to not follow material pursuits, appreciate what you have and gain happiness by helping others. As a documentary it fails - the subjects don't actually add insight in how to be happy. It even avoids the obvious - that people struggling think they are happier because they are battling adversity. If you want to watch a proper film on the subject, Jiro Dreams of Sushi is the film this one wants to be. Or watch or read Joseph Campbell's works on "following your bliss." Although rated NR, it is not for kids. Luckily my 10 year old got bored and left after 5 minutes. Half way through was an interview with a woman describing her recollections of rape and molestations at the hands of her father. Who would have thought that would be in this movie? Needs a warning.

The documentary was well made. The writing was good, most of the stories were interesting, and the research was fascinating. I did have to pause it and watch something else because I started to get bummed, which is odd for a film named "Happy". Perhaps I shouldn't have set my expectations so high, but in the end I appreciated the movie and it had me smiling a lot. I would actually give it 3.5 stars if I could, but 3 just seemed unfair and so I rated it a 4.

What makes us humans makes us happy. Connection and compassion.

In a nation of overconsumption "Happy" truly opens your eyes to the simple things in life. In a world so focused on money and material objects, this documentary masters and gives the audience a distinct picture of the path to true happiness. The path to happiness may not be constructed with yellow bricks-but one paved with laughs, family meals, friendships and lifelong relationships. Five stars.

If you like self-help books, and if you appreciate spiritual as well as scientific approaches to well being this movie is for you. You may already know some of the information presented, you most likely will learn a few new things. But the way the documentary has been built, the way it flows, it makes for great entertainment. I watched it several times, as have my kids (6 and 11). We all loved it.
